What type of piranha is this ??????????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The back margin of a juvie pacus anal fin is almost straight up and down instead of angled forward and also has a bit of hook to it, their teeth while pointed are almost round, for piranha they are quite thin.

I'm so sorry BUT i must say that it is definatly a PACU !!! Judgeing by the mouth !
Nope, FOR SURE not a pacu. I can't really see how this could be confused for one after looking at it close up... finnage, body shape and teeth. Pacu teeth don't look like that. Looks like a dent to me.

That looks almost identical. Heres a couple more pics. A little closer up.. And.. yes the teeth are very sharp!!

After seeing that pic i would say yeah Serrasalmus denticulatus.

But you can see why i would have thought it was Pacu from your first picture !

SORRY GUYS I WROTE THREAD 21 WITHOUT SEEING THE OTHER PICTURE !!! MISTAKE !

I'm not theonly one that does that? heheh.

Well thanks guys!! I was pretty stumped as well. But I am thinking a Dent. as well.
Has anyone had any experiences with these guys? Doing some online reading too... but sometimes you can't always trust what you are reading.
Thanks again!!

Definitely Pygopristis denticulatus. It's a piranha that prefers seeds and fruits, but will also eat fish (I had a shoal destroy a Channa bleheri). It's actually quite cool to watch them go to town on a handfull of birdseed.......... they just don't eat the seeds, they actually husk them with their cusped teeth and spit out the shells! Very cool fish, definitely worth keep, and one that really prefers company of their own kind. I miss my shoal of 10.

Sorry, but I can't find the pics of the ones I used to have, but I can tell you with 100% confidence that the fish you have is Pygopristis denticulatus.
