what type of turtle is this?

When young common snappers often have the more rigid shell, it will fade as it grows. I had the same thoughts with one of mine and he turned out to be a chelydra serpentina osceola. He's still about the size of a softball and has the ridges, I'll see if I can post pics sometime this weekend. Here's a young common snapper showing the ridgid shell

Also, look at the color, pattern on the face of yours, nothing like the face of an ally.
Look at the beak and how large the ridges are on this ally.

mines head isn't yoellow like your first pic. mines "beak" has vertical stripes, and the head has large horozontal stripes of several shapes of brown. dark brown, brown, yellow-brown, ect. Mines tail is not as long as the common snapper (the tail ends with a nob though. i think he fougnt with the breeding pair 20 feet away. no worrys it is completly healed.) and is is thicker. the tail also has these spines sticking out of the topmost part of the tail., and mine has not opened his mouth the way the snapper has. I have placed my finger at the front of the glass, he doesn't go for it.
Also, i am going to south dakota for a few days, an bought feeder golds to keep him busy. I watched him eat, and i describe his method a mix between "stealth and stupid". one minute he will be slowly creeping up on them, the next, he was going from one end to the next tring to get one. it was quite amusing, because the golds outran him by a mile. he is eating though. i turned on the lights this morning to find fewer goldfish, scales, and a few scattered intrals.
i guess the search continues. Thanx for all the help so far. I don't think i would find an uncommon species of snapper, but could mine be a diff. morph of something. I don't a florida snapper could make its way into a NE man-made stream, much less survive winter.

The Florida snapper is pretty widespread, though I doubt that's what you have. As far as the coloring etc. that can vary depend on age, locale etc. There are pink, red, redhead, black, brown and even white snappers. Yours is most likely a common, but a very nice specimen at that. If he's "hunting" his food he's a common, ally's usually use their tongue lure to attract fish into their jaws. I'm glad to hear he's doing good and eating. Try offering him some live freshwater shrimp or small crayfish if you can get them. Mine always loves crayfish.

yeah. the lfs starded getting feeders crays. I figured i would declaw one and toss it in. they were out of them when i got there
thank u for the compliment. i am glad i chose a good one
