What was the best purchase for your first tanks..?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
an HOB that lasted ten years. It was the best $50 that I've ever spent.

Best thing to get IMO is a nice air pump. In the long run it will be able to do many things. run sponge filters, bubble walls and disks, and add decor to your tank.

It's the all in one. but this is not counting a Massive filtration unit.

I have a couple fairly old Penguin HOBs that are still doing well. I switched over to pretty much all AC HOBs like 3 years ago, but I have a 5-6 year old Penguin 330 that has been set up many different ways and is still going strong. It used to be primarily mechanical filtration on a couple different tanks. Now it's a biological filter on my 75, complete with a pothos plant growing hydroponically in it. I also have a couple small Penguins that are probably 8-9 years old and still in pretty good shape.

Also, as far as cycling-a bottle of pure cleaning ammonia I bought at the hardware store. When I got back into fishkeeping in high school, I learned about fishless cycling with cleaning ammonia and it worked wonders starting new tanks for me. (of course now, I just seed with media from established tanks and basically instant cycle)

a python no spill siphon lol and my eheim pro II 2028's

One thing i think everyone should have is a spare water pump, not like a powerhead, but an actual pump. I can't name the number of times one of these would have come in handy for me.

Edit: One very underrated line of HOB filters is the Aqueon models. LOVE these filters, i have started phasing out all of my Aquaclears for these.

My 5g bucket... errr does that count?
