Edit: One very underrated line of HOB filters is the Aqueon models. LOVE these filters, i have started phasing out all of my Aquaclears for these.
I've heard very good things about them. The next time I need a new HOB (who knows when that will be, I have at least 5 spares right now), I'll probably try out an Aqueon

I'd also concur on the python. Hard to believe I used to make 500 trips back and forth emptying and filling my tank before.

For my first tank? My fish which were Fancy Guppies:D

my very best purchase would have to be the huge deal I got when I bought the dismembered 800g sw set up that the dudes ex wife destroyed out of spite. she smashed the tank to get it out of her house, threw the coral and live rock out in the back yard in the middle of winter. what a (&*&%&^$%$&*^*(

though I did get lights, uv, etc.... a good score for 500bucks, almost enough to run a single filter system for multiple tanks the dude believed in serious overkill had this set up to do like a 3000g rating

Python far and wide the #1 best purchase I do 2 50% changes a week on my tanks (High nitrates from the tap) I used to do the bucket brigade on 6 tanks lol before with one tank I "didnt believe in pythons" But the bucket brigade on 6 tanks miraculously changed my opinion lol.

And a close second my eheim classics and ofcourse Prime water conditioner

Water house and my large ass industrial bucket with a nice handle I use for water changes. That and a 2 dollar floating thermometer.

Just being honest.
hehe
:D

First tank "must have"- an extra HOB & $10 Coralife digital thermometer with moveable temperature probe.
Daily use "must have"- Prime, Python & 5G bucket/Ozarka bottle.

I got a magnum 350 for $10 w/ a lot of supplies. Its a p.o.s filter but it the supplies it came with were worth $10.
