What Were the Most Aggressive Cichlids You've Kept Together...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was just going to post something like this, I'm going thru this right now. 8" green terror, 7" ocsar & a 6" jaguar. I just seperated the GT from the other two, he would have killed them in a couple of days. He didn't mind the oscar too much but wanted to kill the jag.

The greatest success I ever had was housing a combination of large/medium cichlids togethor in a 55g tank. I introduced them strategically so the chain of dominance wouldn't be lopsided. I fed them an entire mixture of different pellets, and did 50% water changes every 2-3 days..

8" Texas
6" Pike
4" Convict
4" Firemuth (2)
5" Buttikoferi
6" Salvini
4" Yo-yo Loach
7" Pictus Cat

Cool mix. Who went into the tank last?

i have a paired up jag and red devil both around 9-10' with a 13' pike,6' gt,pair of 6-7' jd,6'salvini it works they all grew up together

I've kept v. maculacaudas(black belts),with managuense, cintrinelum,& grammodes. I also kept v.argentea with some hatiensis but the male argentes killed the other 5 tanks mates they where only 2-3inches at the time in a 55 grow out tank. the male was later given to friend at around 9' who kept him with a pr. of 12' red pikes a 10 or so inch butterkofri & a red devil I believe female liabiatum. The funiiest yet most tragic though was I kept a 5 inch hemichromis Ssp.(jewel weren't really boken into species at thattime) with a 6 inch male convict & a pr of 5-7 inch cintrinelums. After the convict drove a 9inch wolf fish to suicide the jeweled killed the other 3 in day (well the male cintrinellum was humanely flushed). Over the years I've kept lots of cichlids. From neet.nematopus which I think are the worst for thier size fighters there are. I had a 4 inch male chase a 5 inch Geo. stiendachneri relentlessly. The neets. nema. never backed down from anyone smaller or larger. I think with the exception of much larger guapotes(due to thier mouth size) neet.nemas. can be kept with any cichlid ie.amph.,vejas,theraps.

judging by the stock list I'd be willing to bet the butti and texas were last :D

Yep, Buttikoferi and Tex were introduced on the same day, after all the other cichlids could claim territory and their place in the hierarchy.. The Butti and Tex just strived to 'fit in' and after they were added ALL of the cichlids became completely DEFENSIVE, rather then offensive or aggressive.. Overcrowding = Defensive mindset, but can cause longterm acute stress.. I also noticed that not giving them any territory to claim helped alot, too. If I were to make a single cave in that tank, all hell would break loose.. However, the flowered brick I used as the centerpeice would give the smaller fish an object to 'dodge behind' if a larger fish was chasing them.. Seemed to work pretty well, but since there were so many openings from all ends, the centerpeice couldn't be claimed for any single fish.

i've had some crazy mixes but right now i have an 8" jag, 7" midas, and 5" flowerhorn in a tank with a 9" channel cat.up until a month ago i had an 8" butti and a mayan in there too.
that little flowerhorn is the meanest of them all, he spends all day trying to start
with everyone else. other than that the jad and midas just chill and do their
own thing.

id have to say my current red devil he is wikced agro..to anything he killed my 13 inch lungfish..
