What will the offspring look like?

  • Awesome. You should definitely try to raise them.

I have a pair of Jags that have bred for me once. I left all the fry in with the parents in a 253 gallon community Central American cichlid tank so now they're all eaten.

Here's the story. I bought a pair of extremely beautiful wild caught Jags imported from Lake Nicaragua by Jeff Rapps and the male was killed by the female a while back. I then put her with my much larger existing male (tank bred-he's 12-13", she's about 8-8.5") and they look completely different from one another.

Look at these pics of the two and tell me if you think the fry would be worth growing out. Will they be butt ugly or attractive? By their patterns, they're obviously from different regions and I'm not sure what I should do. They female is starting to be a real knockout IMO and the male is so-so. They're doing the dance getting ready to spawn again.

The question is will their different looks come together to make good looking offspring?

Both fish look great. What's there to be hesitant about?

Thanks for the compliment.

Here's what I'm talking about...Look at the former male (from May '07-female was much smaller then). The wild caught male and female looked like they belonged together and it's obvious they came from the same lake by their similar looks. There's no question what their offspring would have turned out to look like. The tank bred male is obviously from another region by his completely different looks and pattern. I'm wondering if their different Jag patterns will mesh together to look awesome or will they be like unwanted ugly redheaded stepchildren?

I'm limited on tanks to raise fry in and I'm already growing out others in my existing growout tanks now. I would have to give up my Trimac fry or Festae fry and I'm not so sure I want to do that...but I'm thinking about it just to see how they turn out. I'm definitely not giving up my Festae fry it'll have to be the Trimacs. They'll be feeders for my little baby Datnoids.

those look like normal jags to me?

Yes, both normal Jags but completely different from one another. Am I just :screwy: in the head? They don't look anything alike. The male is black with lots of markings and the female is gold with very few markings.

I Think it would be cool, More Gold for a Cuban Look!

Go For it.....

I think both fish look awsome but I wouldn't give up festae or trimac fry to raise jags. Just let them breed and if a few fry survive, grow up a couple to see how they turn out. I wouldn't grow up a big batch of them because it would be hard to get rid of them later on.
