What would be in your favorite fish store?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you! And..........???

There is too much stuff to read so sorry if this is the same thing as others put...

- Display tanks that show people how big certain fish really get. Things like oscars, pacus, bala sharks, common plecos... you get the point. Common fish you find at petco and they say it would work in a 30 gallon when in actuality the fish is enormous. You wouldn't have to do this with "rarer" fish because people who would spend that much money on something like a p-bass know how big they get.

- Display tanks in general. Nice ones that range in size and type. You don't need only HUGE display tanks, but normal sized display tanks too like 10 gallons, 20's, 30's, and 50's. The tanks normal people actually buy. Show them what is possible with the small tanks. And wow them with the huge ones.

- Good organized store. Went to a nice store otu of town, but everything was everywhere... I was kind of in a hurry and coudln't find the fish I wanted because that "type" of fish was spead out into 5 different tanks. Have tropicals in one section, cichlids in another, africans in another, bichirs in another, ect.

- For each fish in the store, you should have a one page profile of sorts. This one page would have a picture of the fish, max size, temperament, good tankmats, ect. Just a simple one page of printer paper. Would be dirt cheap, just find the information on the internet. three hole punch it and put it at the end of the aisle.

- Have a computer with internet access available to the customer. That way if they want to know more about the fish... they can look it up. Or if they are trying to find otu the different between male and female, they can look it up. This would make it so you wouldnt' need employees with degrees to answer some questions.

- Keep the labels up to date on the tanks. If a fish is no longer there... remove the label. Its annoying.

- If at all possible, have somewhat healthy feeder fish.

:iagree:keep it simple keep it clean and information is Golden if someone picks up some convicts and a bala give them information on what they are buying. if they are buying a tank promote cycling by a discount if they don't purchase the fish for a few days when they return. Staff that is Knowledgable and also a place that is mostly common easy fish but seperate the fish into a seperate area that require experience to keep. dont put the gars beside the guppys lol. Host weekly information sessions. care and upkeep of your tank. once people learn how to keep the basic guppys alive then they likely will move up to the bigger stuff. information turns a kid who likes fish into a hobbyist who wants a bigger tank. the better your customers get at keeping there fish alive the more they are willing to spend on the specialty fish and the better equipment. my favorite store will show you how he built his sumps or his canisters. he will sell you a manufactured one but if you save on how much the hobby costs then you are willing to spend more on the fish and the stuff in the tanks. but once again CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. I hate going into a dungeon to by fish.

Heres another one...

- Have the ability to order fish. You might not need to keep rare fish that MFK'ers may want because it just isn't profitable because not enough people will pay for it. But having the ability to order a wide variety of rarer fish in would make you a favorite quickly.

At least one very knowledgeable person on every shift. Enough fish catchers to get you on your ways quickly. Fish catchers that know which type of net to use for the fish they are catching. I've seen too many plecos and other cats get stuck in nets and some moron trying to rip the net free.

All fish labeled with common name and scientific name along with exact requirements for keeping the fish, temperament, the size it will grow to and a list of other fish that can be kept with them. A quality reference book in every isle chained to a pole so people can look up info on fish they are about to buy and less knowledgeable staff can use for reference.

Someone on staff whose main job is to remove the dead or sick fish from tanks - there is nothing less appealing then seeing dead fish floating in tanks or sick fish in their death throws.

A staff that doesnt tell you a minimum requirement for an oscar is 10 Gals. :D

a free plane trip to Canada and a "get out of jail free" card with every $10,000 purchase! :D

but does it come with a some good bourbon, a hot blues band and a couple hookers?

Rocks
PS but seriously, I'd love to see a good quality fish book in every isle for customer and employee use. It would be great to have a reference to look up info on every fish easily accessible for everyone. After all, if someone buys a fish they should know as much about it as possible before they make the decision to buy any fish. They would know exactly how big it gets, special requirements, ease of raising. We need more responsible pet owners, not more clueless idiots that...... (you can fill in the blanks)
