You can heat a pond of 600 or so gallons pretty easily in the winter. I use a bank of 3, 1000 watt heaters in my 600 gallon ponds. I also use a solar cover. The cover combined with a "wind free" location and the heaters keep the ponds at about 76 degrees F all winter long. Our winters don't usually get much (if any) below zero though. I use Process Technology Heaters at about $90 each. I don't remember what the controller cost me...I think it was around $150. It may seem expensive but in my case I did'nt have room in the house for all 3 ponds so if I wanted to keep the fish I had to expand outdoors. The ponds are also well insulated...that makes a huge differance as does enclosing the external filters.

I build ponds during the summer, if i had my own place wouldnt mind having a pond but im totally into my tanks, the bigger the better. course when you have a short summer and long winters tanks just seem to make sense

Both!! I seen a house here in Utah... The lady had a pond that on two sides were glass for the living room view of the pond... So if you were on the couch you seen right into the pond and if you were standing you got the overveiw... The back cornere walls were a water fall.. I couldn't see how it was done and she had no time to tell me but it was one of the coolest tank/ponds i've ever seen... Wait it was the only tank pnd I'd ever seen!! LOL
