I prefer freshwater because:
Most freshwater fish are captive bred
Most saltwater fish are taken from the wild
Freshwater fish have adapted to living in variable water quality, temperature and chemistry (much like an aquarium) while saltwater fish are adapted to a more constant environment.
Freshwater fish can live a full and long life cycle in a well run aquarium. Few marines can achieve natural lifespans in well run aquariums (nor are they happy enough to breed).
For me this is an ethical choice. I want my fish to be happy and the environment to be protected.

no offense to your beliefs here, but how is it that we have come across captive breeding programs? years of wild collecions. there are a few sw fish that are now captive bred and as technology/information continues im sure there are more on the way. just a thought

and is it that freshwater fish are all that more adaptive? yea to an extent or is it just that people are more willing to set up a closer environment to natural for a $50 fish rather than just throwing that $2 fish into whatever comes out of the tap?

i honestly want to keep a sw tank ive done tons tons reaserch and just about bought every book out there the only thing keeping me back is me growing up in a house hold where everytime i talked about sold i got a lecture about how hard it is. since i live on my own now i could do it. but it still nagges in the back of my head

It is a close one for me, but have to go saltwater. Deciding factor is the ecosystem you create. Its awesome in my opinion to have so many symbiotic relationships. It may be common but the clownfish in the anemone still is amazing to me. My pistol shrimp and the goby is pretty cool as the shrimp constantly digs tunnels all over the sand with the goby watching out the whole time. My favorite though is the cleaner shrimp setting up a cleaning station that the fish come to for cleaning. Still just amazes me. Those are all pretty "common" examples, but there are dozens more than are not so common.

Then you have things like the pistol shrimp that even though I dont see him often (just the different tunnels he has dug and the sand he moves) he is still one of my favorites. Everytime he snaps his claw I still worry my tank has just cracked (for those that dont know SW or pistol shrimp it makes ridiculous loud snapping sounds with its claw when threatened (actually caused by the cavitation of bubbles as the closing of claws send a jet of water up 60mph)

Had to laugh at everyone who says SW fish dont have as good of personalities. Everyone has their own opinions, but the thought that SW fish lack personality I think lacks understanding of the various saltwater fish. My favorite personalities in my tank are my tailspot blenny, bluespotted watchman goby, and of course my clownfish pair and their anenome.

I have 23 freshwater tanks and 2 saltwater tanks, but if money was not an issue I would have it at least half and half(I would only want reef tanks and cant afford the electricity for too many high powered lights).
