whats a good quality heater for a 180 gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
probly gona need to run 2 heaters. thats all i can think of. i dont yet have this tank size altho i wish i did or i could help you more.

and to make things even more confusing, I would recommend and use jager heaters. So, as you can see, there are lots of favorites and lots of good and bad experiences with all brands of heaters. I personally find the fluval heaters to be complete junk.

i have a JBJ true temp digital controller with a 800w heating element and am able to keep constant 84f in my 180g. anything less than 800watts wont work IMO

yeah that system was most likely costly?

A cheaper solution is to buy 3 "standard" 300 wat heaters. 2 would prob do the job, but 3 gives you the fail safe if 1 breaks. I use multiple heaters for every tank i own, my goldfish died from a "marineland" heater with a broken thermonater bringing the tank to 100 deg. With multiple smaller heaters, even if 1 over heats it wont severly impact the over-all temp visaversa will one not producing any heat and the tank freezing.

Over-all advice is unless you have the $$$ to buy an top of the line heating system (name brand does not mean topline), use multiple to produce 20% over recommened WATTS. Name brand should be decided by price, warranty, and personal preference.

Uh - I run 2 125 watt jagers on my 180 and keep a steady 80 degrees all year round. Granted, I'm in california, but my house gets down into the low 60's in the winter. 800 watts is a recipe for disaster if the heaters fail in the "on" posistion, but thats JMO

Way overkill! The Eheim run hot and you could run a single 300 watt which is rated for 265g which I do believe it could handle. This would be cheaper than 3 standard 300 watt heaters. Or if you are one of the just in case for redundancy sake people, two 200 watt Eheims would probably work just fine.

On my 120g I have one 300 watt Eheim and I had to turn it WAY down because it was more heater than was necessary. I believe I could have used the 200 watt model and been just fine. Previous to this I has two Hydor ETH inline 300 watt heaters on this tank and realized it needed only one. I pulled the two Hydors for my 210g and I'm sure it is more than enough. But this of course depends on the location of your tank and the temperature variances there.
