whats a good quality heater for a 180 gal?

I run two 300w aquatop digital display heaters, love the look of them and has the temp on display. Kill two birds with one stone.

I wouldn't recommend any Hydor heaters. I have 1 300 watt and 2 400 watt theo submersible heaters. They're all off 7 degrees or more. A while back my 55 gallon tank with the 300 was at 90 degrees and I had it set on 78. I doubt there is anything about the inline that makes it more accurate.

Way overkill! The Eheim run hot and you could run a single 300 watt which is rated for 265g which I do believe it could handle. This would be cheaper than 3 standard 300 watt heaters. Or if you are one of the just in case for redundancy sake people, two 200 watt Eheims would probably work just fine.

On my 120g I have one 300 watt Eheim and I had to turn it WAY down because it was more heater than was necessary. I believe I could have used the 200 watt model and been just fine. Previous to this I has two Hydor ETH inline 300 watt heaters on this tank and realized it needed only one. I pulled the two Hydors for my 210g and I'm sure it is more than enough. But this of course depends on the location of your tank and the temperature variances there.

lol no. 300 watt is usually recommened to raise a 75-100 gal by 5 degrees, so 900 wats would only be able to raise his tank 7-12 degrees at most, not over-kill. Ive never used Eheim but i couldnt imagine their much different, though they boast 300wat for 275gal its only to raise it by 5 degrees above room tempeture. So ehiem might boast 275 gal but if your house must remain at a temp of 74, I learned not to trust advertising a long time ago. 300w x3 should be no more then 70$ from a reputable company.

Personally I wouldnt trust a heater that boast 200g more then the average 300w heater! Post count dont equal knowledge. 1 300 wat heater for a 180 gal tank, that has to be the worst advice i have heard on this site. I dont like to take risk being a cheapo.

i run 1 250watt , and 1 200 watt heater , constant 85F all the time , but then again i insulated my stand and side of my tank

why 85???? better keep that air blasting!!!! unless you have an illness or something in special need of heat in the tank, its always better to keep the temp. as low as possible

3w per gallon is what many people use and it works well.

it should be able to heat water up to tropical fish temps (around 76-82 depending) no matter what your ambient room temp is, unless its in a freezing cold basement.

the new eheim jagers claim even better efficiency and drop the watts per gallon formula by a whole lot, it remains to be seen how they do.

I only use eheim jagers, when I replaced some older ones with the new ones, I still followed the 3w per gallon rule that I use. so technically, my 200w on my 65 is probably a bit overkill as the new 200w are supposedly good for up to a 175g tank or something like that..

that is if their new range is correct.
