whats a good quality heater for a 180 gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Eheim 250w heaters are good for up to 159 gallons.
A 300w Eheim will definitely heat a 180 just fine by its self.

I am certain a 250w heater BY IT SELF would have no problems at all heating a 180g tank.

You need to do some reading and some trial and error...on being a cheapo.
Ive got a single 250w heater in a 125g tank right now. Tank is in a basement that is a constant 70-71 degrees.
Tank water is a constant 80.3 degrees give or take .4 degrees. Ive seen the heater kick on 3 times in 10-12 minutes for
30-55 second intervals.

Yes, another Eheim owner speaks up because he has firsthand experience with the item! Since I have personally used the item I too can say I feel that a single 300 watt Eheim would work fine in a 180g.

It's kinda like using a Honda civic to pull a boat trailer, it might work but I wouldn't recommend it. I use a true temp 800w and have a Jag 300 as back up. I would just use two 300w if you want to save money, never just one. This is MFK, over kill is just right, just enough is not enough.

I'm not saying it should be done, I said it could be done. Even in my own 210g tank I have 600 watts. My thought is that the Eheim seem to be a lot of heater for the money. Its your Honda civic souped up a bit more than normal.

I have a 300 watt Hydor theo heaters and a 300 watt titanium heater of some sort. The Hydors are very reliable, I've been using them since I have started this hobby with no problems.

Yeah, definitely would not want to use a heater that was rated to heat the specific size of aquarium.
That would be a big no no.
