WHAT'S A GOOD RARE CICHLID TO START BREEDING PROJECT

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't exactly call these guys rare, but EBJD??

How about something from the ACA CARES Conservation Program list (http://www.cichlid.org/ACA_CARES.html )?

These are fish that are endangered or threatened in the wild, so the ACA is encouraging hobbyists to maintain captive lines of them.

There are quite a few new world fish in the program:
Amphilophus bussingi
Amphilophus lyonsi
Amphilophus rhytisma
Archocentrus altoflavus
Archocentrus myrnae
Archocentrus nanoluteus
Archocentrus septemfasciatus
Archocentrus spinosissimus
Parachromis sp. ‘La Ceiba yellow head’ - a new addition.

There are also tons of Victorians and other cichlids on the list...

I've personally been wanting to get a pair of Archocentrus nanoluteus but I have no idea how to get them. Does the above stated program provide any means of getting these fish?

I have some (PM me)...

But - yes - if you join the ACA you get access to the ACA Trading Post... which allows you to reach out to the folks in the CARES program and see if they have some for sale...

Totally agree... would love to see lyonsi more available.

Loisellli's are really keeping their prices up. I chose madagascars and strongly encourage you to do whatever most strikes your fancy. This hobby is not a money maker, but managing it effectively can allow it to pay it's way a lot of the time. Just keep what you want on whatever scale you want and share your passion for it. Even convicts can be traded in for a new heater or air pump now and then. Rare cichlids buy me new toys, the rarer the fish (and the risk), the nicer the toys.

Yeah you right I was thinking the trimacs or sagitae colored or even the yellow head parachromis la cieba I love dovii but there too common and alot of local fish store

one fish that comes to mind is a red tiger motoguense. I have not seen any of these cichlids in my local fish store. The last time I saw one was about 4 years ago. These fishes have stunning colors.
