if you keep the temp at 84-86 when you do the water changes it will trigger breeding FACT

I keep my temp at 86 and at water change time it drops to 82 in summer and 78 in winter never had any problems and the male starts to show more intrest in the females when the new colder water is added

i think the cold water being added simulates rain fall
i have noticed biteing right after water changes as well rain fall nice

My experience is that the rays become much more sexually active upon change of temptarture. Spring, therefore is the best time for them as the temrature flucktuates. I have also heard about someone who puts some ice in the tank to make that change.... I won't recommend though.

My 2 cents.

I heard from guy keeping public aquarium here in Tampere that at least when female is carrying the pups, the temperature should be lower. Around 77-79. The reason is that they saw more deformations in pups, when temperature was higher. They get new breeds quite often and they've had much better results in tanks with lower temperature.

I know that is a common strategy for Koi, but dont know if Id try it with Stingrays.

Ya'aa I don't do that. At spring mine are so active, that I don't need to really do anything. But, that means one litter a year (which is good for me and I think for the female as well).

it is colder at the bottom of the amazon, but figure rainfalls and cold water do stimilate the sexyness. i would say it all depends as you see it all works for everyone that has breed. my temps in the winter are low at 78 and i use a chiller to drop them to 74 at night. in the summer i raise it to 80 and 76 at night. mine are a lot happier with the temp flux. and when i do move them to the outdoor pond in the summer i dont use heaters at all and let nature take its course...

healthy, happy, eat less, cleaner water...works for breeding also but again they are usually in the pond when that happens..
