Temp drops is a common "trigger" for breeding in most fish, water changes also add highly oxygenated water to the tank.
I saw a documentary recently that said in the Amazon the trigger is floods with rain as food and space is greatly increased therefore I think it is not the starting temp but the drop to simulate rains.
If you start high then the drop is tolerated within the safe zone without the fish metabolism slowing.
I think tha quality water and food is the most important thing to any form of fish breeding. (put me in a cell with any woman and as long as I have enough food and water then sooner or later she will wake the beast! LOL)
