They sell for so much because it has only happened a few times, and nobody really knows why. I think all the breedings were natural in captivity also, not artificially.

Didn't plan on selling it for that much seriously what did I do? I just provided the home for the turtles to have babies... I'd sell them for $20-$50 prob...am buying the turtles Tuesday!

There going in my pond I'll make a thread about how it goes.

yeah it said the first time it happened there was only 2 in the clucth but now they have more.

hahaha once you put all this time and money into the breeding project i bet youll change your mind when u get some to sell

guess time will tell haha. I was thinking about adding a female painted turtle. so 2x male res and 1x female map 1x female painted. I think the painted might breed also cause the res and painted looks very similar. I'll have to do more research. Am having trouble finding genus of the speisces and everything is there just one site for the turtles?

Wikipedia is a joke for most things, but I actually use it quite often to check family, genus, stuff like that. They are pretty accurate and its easy to access.

You are going to need 2 smaller size male res and 2 large female painted and map, for any change of working. However go in a easy, just for the fun of it way. Even when your trying to breed the same species of turtles it can take many years to have any kind of result. It may never work, however if you dont try you will never know :) You can increase your chances by doing several trios of this combo, these are not expensive turts and you could get free adult ones from people that dont have the space for having them. Any outcome will be interesting for shure. PaintedsXres Ive herd rumors of happening. If I had to put my money on it I would say its possible. The babys should be some sigth to behold :D

I'm not too good with turles, but I do know one thing: The title could use a little work.:nilly::ROFL:

EDIT: Wow, typo.......^^^ Just goes to show I guess.

Instead of getting several females of different species, I'd suggest getting several females of the same species along with several males who are all the same of a different species. So get all male RES, and all female Maps, for example. That would increase your chances of breeding and if eggs do show up, you won't have to play a guessing game as to which female species layed them.

Red eared sliders and map turtles have been successfully cross bred though.

No matter what science tells us Mother Nature always throws in a suprise every now and then. Just like komodos laying eggs with no males and the eggs hatched.

That's why I noted that some of those crosses may work, but there are many factors that come into play that can make them not work even if such a cross has happened before.

As for the Komodo dragons, it turns out that their system of sex determination is different than that of many other animals. They have a ZW sex determination system rather than the more common XY system; males are homogametic and have two Z chromosomes while females are heterogametic and have one Z chromosome and one W chromosome. If a female doesn't mate with a male, then her unfertilized haploid eggs will double their chromosomes in order to become diploid; in this case, she reproduces asexually rather than sexually. Only the ZZ eggs will be viable and go on to become males; the WW eggs will fail to develop. This method of reproduction is believed to allow females to colonize islands by themselves and establish a sexually reproducing population.
