whats better for sex? turtle breeding....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Alright am going with 3 f map turtles large 3 f painted turtles large and 3 m res small. When I sex the map and paints I can use the same method for the res ,correct? That's what a site told me. And any sites or places in Los angles or orange county to buy these buggers? I can find res all over the place but not the other guys.

The small RES, make sure that they are at least 5 years old to make sure that they can mate. Small could mean a year old, and sexually immature, and thus you end up with 3 turtles that can't mate for several more years. Make sure you clear that up with the place you buy from.

UPDATE!!!! which species of map is bigger? and which species of painted is better to bread with the res? here is the email responce i got back
Hello Adam,
Are you looking for Mississippi Maps? Which painted turtles were you interested in. We have eastern, western, and southern.
Thank you,
should i also get those turtles at 5 years of age also? am messaging her about small male adult (5yrs old) res also.

another question, how big should i make the island in there pond? i was thinking 5x5 and then have a shallow part attached to the island so when they are "doing there making turtle babbies together" the male a female can stretch there necks up for air. and what should i be feeding to encourage breeding? is repto sticks fine?

I used to keep a RES and a cooter and wanted to hybridize them. Turned out they were both male lol. i love that the reptile section here isnt so anti hybrid :) Good luck

Western painteds are the way to go, they are the largest. As for maps you could go with G. pseudogeographica, which are the ones that normally interbreed with res.
As for food a normal turtle diet including a good brand of pellet like reptomin or mazuri as well as fresh foods is what you want.

Pearl River Maps get pretty large but may be harder to find a large one. If you guys want to see a real cool turtle hybrid check out the Diamondback Terrapin X Map turtle.
