Whats in the future for fishkeeping?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A few years ago, a gathering of That Fish Place scale, coming up, would never have happened.

I guess that it depends on who you ask...

If you ask my stepmother, she'd say its decreasing because back when she was younger, a house wasn't really complete without a fish tank - even if it was just a couple of goldfish.

Nowadays you don't see that. People are busy, kids are more interested in TV and video games or are just lazy.

However, if you ask Petsmart or Petco and realize that the overall pet industry is growing every year, they'd say that with fishkeeping being a part of that, people are spending more on their pets than ever.

I think that sites like this encourage the hobby to grow, I know I've probably spent a lot more on fish than I would have without inspiration from people that I've seen on this site and many others. Also don't forget that sites like this really help people avoid disaster in their tanks which might also have otherwise discourages a person from pursuing the hobby.

I think that if Petsmart and Petco were to invest in some knowledgeable people in their stores, the hobby would be a lot better off as well.

I can agree with that. But my point was that it's spreading knowledge at a far more quicker rate than years ago when you might have had a local fish club if you're lucky or knew a couple people you met at the lfs or something.

Gr8 point. :headbang2

I def. would not have been sucked up into this hobby if it were not for this site!

I have also noticed that the younger generation tend not to be into fish so much these days, seems like hard core true fish hobbiest are dying out...

I think that being on this board people can easily get fooled that this hobby is growing BUT IMO its actually decreasing...

in a way it would be nice if it was.... think about it this way if the new morons stay out of it and only serious people stay in i think it would be better for the hobby in general...

But then how would the average person get addicted? There are more fish stores now, then when I was growing up. We had 1 fish only store, and 3 pet stores, now I couldn't even tell you how many I live by.

i guess its just racism on my part to alot of the idiots ive met either entering the hobby or have been in it for awhile but just think they are right and no more than anybody... those people who dont care to learn and expand would be nice not to see them in the hobby anymore

I can definately agree with that.
