Sites like this one and the internet itself will take this hobby to a whole new level. We're already seeing a larger amount of custom built tanks/huge acrylic tanks then you would have seen 10-15 years ago. As well as I think more hobbiests with an overall grasp of fishkeeping. Of course fish mags like TFH help as well but I think the internet is the best thing that ever happened to fishkeeping. You will see new advances in filtration, and other things. That will come with time. One person comes up with the idea and it quickly spreads because of sites/internet.

I do think many of the fish will stay rare(golden korean perch, etc) no matter what because of new regulations, and the fact that we don't know everything about fish esp. the rarer species and what it takes exactly for them to breed. I think you will continue seeing new species every once in a while as well.
I agree with you....

This is only my opinion but i see a lot of "Mom and Pop" LFSs going out of business soon due to on-line ordering wich is a real shame.I also see many of the hard to find species being harder to find due to outragious priceing.I also see less and less knowlegable people working in LFSs due to pay rates, wich in turn will cause a lot of newbies to drop out of the hobby because of failures in fish keeping. Now i cant speak for how it is in different cities and towns, but i know how it is here in my city and it doesnt look good.

on-line ordering WILL kill the lfs in the department of equip but NOT in aquarium sales or fish sales just last week i went looking for a air pump for my feeder tank (a whisper 300) and knew that i could get it online for 40$ when i got to the fish shop the same exact pump was 70$ there i had a couple of things that i wanted to buy also but for saving as much as i could online i didn't bother to look anymore it wasn't worth it

on the other hand in the past 4 months two of my LFS have had GREAT tank sales one was 1$ a gal up to 75 and 2$ a gal up to 210 now these weren't drilled tanks and they weren't for specailty tanks (hex, corner, bowfront) but if u go online to buy a 125 gal i can't even get shipping for 165$ which is what i can go out TODAY and buy a new 125 gal tank for

i myself am only 22 and i thank my mom for getting me into this hobby she and my father used to have a mom and pop store (lol i amde a funny) before they got a divorce well last x-mas she got me some fish (4 months ago) and now i have 4 tanks set up (125gal RBP tank, 10 gal, 3 fantail golds, 5 hex 4 med comets, and a 75 feeder) and i have a 54 gal corner community tank on the way all and all in the past coupe of months i have spent 5000$+ on all this and i am glad i have. i love the hobby

below are a couple of pics to show what i got including my car to show its not only the 50+ers that have the toys i have just been VERY VERY lucky to be where i am and very lucky to have a job that likes me so much it wants me there 56 hours a week lol

sry for this being so longwinded i had alot to say :nilly:

Yeah, I've got other hobbies as well to focus on eventually.

MR2 and Stealth TT...mr2 is gone and replaced by a camry. The TT threw a rod so I'm gonna focus on other things for a few months.

in the future i see more species being selectively for new varieties
like albino-hypo clown loaches:drool: imagine that

I hope not...

I see a couple of things going on....

I miss the Mom and Pop places for sure. When I was younger, they had the best fish and the most knowledge. Now, we're getting info online from keepers on 6 continents. Mass production places like Petco/Petsmart are more about volume than quality. When was the last time you hit one of those two and didn't see a sick fish or a bunch of dead bodies being eaten by others. 1 in 50 'fish people' at those places are actually knowledgble when it come to fish.

The money is getting focused on how big we can go. Look at the last few major aquariums that opened... each time the main display gets bigger and bigger. We also need to focus on the small stuff. We need to keep focusing on the 'big picture' not the big tanks.

More needs to be invested in learned about (and preserving) the natural environment. We need to then apply that knowledge to our hobby.

We also need to keep reminding ourselves of what works. If something isn't broken, we might not need to fix it. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for expanding and growing, but sometimes tried and true methods are the best.

Captive breeding needs to be done large scale by people other than those trying to make money. We need more focus on re-establishing wild populations. Again, it takes reserch money to do it correctly.

blame wal-marx if that place would not have come to fruition then all the other one stop shops would not be carrying fish and fish accesories the idea of someone trying to tell me what kind of fish to buy then what type of T.V. to buy is obsurd

but i think the best inovation listed so far is trying to get a water-changless system only needing top off water from evap that would bee sweet to be able to keep your water perameters perfect think of it u could keep HUGE tanks and not worry about the water bill

Cool thread to bring back. I'll play ball.

I believe the future of filtration will be in using titanium dioxide as a photocatalytic oxidizer to complete the nitrification cycle. It will also be able to do this on demand making nitrifying bacteria no longer necessary and possibly even eliminating the need for mechanical filtration. If anyone is interested I'll post some links.

As much as I would love to do some testing with this stuff, I was recently quoted at over $1500 dollars to buy 2.5 gallons of it. Not to mention the minimum they will sell you is 2.5 gallons. So cost effective wise I'd like to think its still pretty far off in the future.

I live in australia and fish keeping seems to be booming in my area over the last six months several private owned business have opened opposed to just the one that was hanging in there. the bigger companies dont seem to have much other than a variety of goldfish. the only problem over here is that nothing is cheap so if you are into the fish scene you need money to support it. in my area the only cichlid you see under $20 is a convict if you are lucky.

One sad thing Ive noticed is the disappearance of the Mom and Pop Petshops which are slowly being replaced by the teenage no nothings of big corporations!

:(

no doubt

I have also noticed that the younger generation tend not to be into fish so much these days, seems like hard core true fish hobbiest are dying out...

I think that being on this board people can easily get fooled that this hobby is growing BUT IMO its actually decreasing...

Perhaps my perceptions are incorrect?

Anybody with teenage children have thoughts on this?

well I don't have teenagers but I do have 7 kids and 1 coming in dec :headbang2, and, I can tell you that my 5 oldest are all hot to trott to get their own tanks set up. Our fish room will be a sight to behold when I get it done as they will have their own tanks to care for. For when they reach bday 12 I have decided to give them a mission to plan out their tank and we will build it together with some advice from me. 2 of my kids have their own mfk/ac accts and my 9 year old can not wait to set his up. I told him he has to be able to type and be able to post his own threads. Though I can tell you they readily are looking over my shoulder as I am on here.

I think your perceptions are incorrect. I think it is more the fact that teenagers don't have thosands of dollars to put into a fish tank. In the last month, I sold a 55 setup to a 15 year old, cheap, and felt bad for charging him, because it was mostly in singles. I have also given 10's and 20's to people with pre teen kids because they love fish. I think they like fish, they just don't know about MFK scale home aquariums, or can't afford them. Is there a way to find out how many people are in the goup that are under 18, ar maybe 21?

i guess its just racism on my part to alot of the idiots ive met either entering the hobby or have been in it for awhile but just think they are right and no more than anybody... those people who dont care to learn and expand would be nice not to see them in the hobby anymore

but nic people are like chameleons they can change at will never give up on people ;) when you least expect it the most idiotic people wake up to reality, because the bank of reality never bounces cheques and it uses direct deposit. :naughty:

heck ya post some links on that I would like to see

Here is a take that I have on the future of fish keeping.

With the influx of the whole melting pot effect on the world where borders are falling, I see a form of the mom an pop shop dying for sure. Yet, that is a very avoidable thing, they refuse to change and any business that refuses to change with the currents of the day in which they find themselves will be swept away by those very currents.

This may be a bad thing but for those types of mom and pop shops, may they meet a tsunami and vanish. Now, on the flip side I believe you will see some sharp operators who not only survive but flourish in the corporate landscape we see today.

I believe you will also see some "mom & pop" shops which surface which have nothing to do with the way mom and pop did things, but everything to do with the way the new kids on the block do things.

I will speak from my personal life here to share what I mean. I am a business person and I look at things from that perspective. I am forever looking at things and saying to my wife look at this opportunity or that.

So I decided that I would fix the whole in the fish market where I live and start a fish company. I figure it this way, smart suppliers will not brush off a person with a solid plan and vision for what they are going to do. For if they simply brush off the up and comer they are not really such a smart supplier. With this approach I have managed to line up an impressive group of suppliers who are very eager to supply my fish company when I get it up and running. Yet, rather than rush things, I have chosen to lay the foundation first, getting a solid relationship with the fish keeping community of regina to hear what they have to say about the state of affairs as it were.

I believe you will many smart operators who pop open a new wave of mom and pop shops, with a view point of making less over the short purchase and more over the steady string of purchases as it were. A string of smart operators who understand the concept of just in time inventory, who understand the need for clean and well kept shops.

"There are those who may say im a dreamer, well I am not the only one" ;)

Pretty much I am going to build something that has not been seen in saskatchewan and will definitely be a point of destination for people!!!!

Ask anyone who is in small business who has made it past the first five years and see what they say!

I decided with my restaurant that I would bang out a sanctuary concept for people to come zone out in and you should see the looks of wonder that come on peoples faces when they come in.

I think for too long the experts have been allowed to complicate the simple so that they could take credit for simplfying the complicated. I think that forums like this are invaluable resources to point people to, to show them that it is not so hard to have a nice tank. The day has come for the corporate purse snatchers to loose their market to the education that comes from the internet.
