whats the best chemical media to keep odors and nitrate low

I don't know the answer. I never test my waters, yet I still have breeding cichla. I do 25% water changes a day, no weekly changes. I smell my water, fell the temp...that is how I test my waters.
I run nothing but sponges and bio media in my filters and nothing else. So, I guess my answer would be more water changes.

after gf or and kids feed while im gone for 5 days. i come home and nitrates are 40 ppm to 100
this week i came home and she said i have been feeding 3 times a day so i know i over fed a little.
So I checked nitrate levels and had 5 ppm i just went WOW Im getting more chemical filtration

Because i dont know how long nitra zorb will last recharging it. And i dont know if there cons to go with the pros, lol
and i want the best for the job.
nita zorb uses salt to recharge.
purigen use,s bleach so im sure there not the same compound
