What's the best internal parasite med?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Personally, I use Paragaurd as more of a broadcast treatment. I tend to only use a half dose of that though, as I don't exactly enjoy adding chemicals to the tanks. If the issue isn't treated within a few doses (2-3) I'll separate said fish into my quarantine and target with something a bit more powerful, like Metro or Prazi.

It can depend on the internal parasite needed to be treated. There are factors that can effect what will and won't work. There is no one treat all best of all. Most of the packaged meds like parasite guard or general care or others are blends of several different meds. I've seen cases where drugs like these don't work. And cases where they do. Its one of the reasons there are different meds out there to use. Just like bacteria some of these parasites are becoming resistant to various meds. It will also depend on if a fish is eating or not. Some meds work better ingested.

I've tried/used with success on various occasions as well had some not work in certain cased.

Api General care
Parasite guard
fenbendazole
levamisole
piperazine
Praziquantel
Metronidazole
Epsom salt
Boiled and shelled peas

Only Parasite med I keep on hand anymore is Parasite guard. It contains Metro, Prazi, acriflavine and Diflubenzuron.
I read the entire thread but saw no need to quote it.I will look into adding this med to my quarantine regimen.

I take that back. I also keep Binox on hand in case of Bacterial breakout but have never had need to use it.

Just as a heads up to the OP, the Jungle Parasite Tabs are not meant to be used as a pellet food i don't think... rather, you are meant to dissolve it in the tank water, or another option which a lot of puffer keepers do, is to soak the food you plan on feeding your fish with tank water + an appropriate amount of meds such as Prazi...

Let the food soak for at least a few hours in the tank water + med solution, then feed the food to your fish so that you can try and get them to take the meds orally as much as possible...

I am quite sure they make a medicated pellet too...

I use the jungle tabs only $5 and they have worked for me! but just incase i have metro+ and epsom salts on hand too

It's actually pellets to eat. i read the lable carefully just to check. My fish never eats them. not even goldfish.

Prazi is said to treat external as well as internal parasites...That is pretty much the only medication I keep on hand these days.
what exactly is prazi? Is a fish supposed to eat it?

Also is epson salt a good alternative?

Prazi=Praziquantel. It targets a specific type of parasite called Trematoda (flatworms/flukes). Is ineffective against Nematodes and other forms of parasites.
