What's the best internal parasite med?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How about telling us the sypmtoms? Or have you seen anything specific? There are various parasite. And Clout can treat internal as well as external. But really depends on what you are dealing with. Pictures of the affected fish?

My fish is an armatus which is very active and "healthy" looking. The only thing is that he bearly eats and there is a whitetish thing that sticks out of his bum. He is just a tad skinny. I saw whitish yellow poop here and there this week. He just ate yesterday.

Clout used to contain metronidazole which it no longer does. A lot of Tropheus keepers such as me used to keep it on hand because of the metro in it was good for bloat, an internal condition that Tropheus are susceptible to. Now we keep pure Metronidazole or something with it as an ingredient.
Packaging on it clearly states external us though.

why does the package state for external use when it can also be use for internal use? Does it help cure my fish's syndrome?

Here is what i would recommend at this point. There are alot of options. You need to probably start somewhere. How many gallons are you going to treat this fish in? This will determine the amounts of Meds needed.

Metronidazole is a good one to start with or Something like API general cure as its got both Metro and Prazi in it together. This can also be mixed with Epsom salt with no harm. This can work even if the fish is not eating the greates. I would recommend taking some of the food if the fish is eating and soak it in Garlic and Epsom salts. The garlic will stimulate the fishes appetite, as well as help rid the parasite out of the body. The epsom salt will also help purge the parasite from the fish. The Metro/Prazi combo will help aid and kill the parasites.

Clout packaging states not to use on small scaled fish like Silver Dollars, I would assume that includes armatus. I am not sure clout works internally anymore since it no longer contains Metronidazole.

What does the armatus eat? Feeders? Having just got my Armatus' I am not familiar with what meds are safe for them. You might be better off PMing someone like Chix, Sashi, DB Junkie or Exotic Fish Guy. Or some other more knowledgeable Characin keepers.

Edit: I concur with Aquaticfan, if it were mine I would does with Metro and Prazi which would cover alot of the potential pathogens. Just be aware of stress with the fish. If he shows any ill effects from the meds do a partial water change and use smaller doses.

It has 1,2,dimethyl-5-nitroimidazole. This is an internal parasite medication that is a "form" of Metro. Its also got some other compounds in it that are good with Internal parasites.

It says External use meaning you dont feed it to your fish. Its meant to treat the water. It is pretty strong stuff. One other compound in it is Metrifonate (Dimethyl (2,2,2,Trichloro-1-Hydroxyethyl) Phosphonate) This is used in the treatment of Schistosomiasis, Which is a parasite/trematodes. These are the 2 compounds in Clout that make it work for Internal Parasites so well.

It does have other compounds in it. Such as Malachite green.. but not something thats an internal parasite killer.

Again it is strong an as pointed out not recommended for all fish.

Yeah.. For an Arm I would def not use Clout.. it does a good job but it can very easily kill fish when ODed. like I said prior I've limited use w/ Metro and would do prazi ( I've used it on some very sensitive species in the past w/ no negative side effects, I would classify an Arm as a sensitive fish. But I would def check w/ the Arm guys what they use for IPs as I imagine this must be fairly common with this fish as they seem hard to get offa live foods and are 100% WC) A picture of his "bum" would also help ID what your dealing with. If he's got a prolapsed rectum, anchor worms, tape worms ect..

If your fish is active, and still eating, then start small, instead of using a shotgun approach with meds that have the potential to do long term harm to any species of fish. Even metronidazole can be lethal if used at high enough doses, or for too long. Check this out.

With any luck that's the only "treatment" that your fish will require. If you don't see any improvement by next weekend post back & we can proceed from there.

I just bought a bag of epsom salt. I'm wondering what's the most straightforward way to use it? I don't really like to use meds since armatus are quite sensitive fish.

Do the I use epsom salt internally or externally?

I heard that you can either put some in the tank like aquarium salt or put some on the food so my armatus can eat it. WHAT'S THE RIGHT WAY TO DO IT? INTRUCTIONS?

thanks
