Whats the best way to kill a dying fish??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
go to gnc and get the clove oil.

Freezing is pretty bad, each cell ruptures then crystallizes...

People probably think freezing is okay because they don't SEE the fish suffer. Fish are cold blooded and probably just can't fight as hard if they're too cold. I'm sure it's incredibly painful. The water in the cells expands and ruptures the cell walls.

As for decapitation... I'm not sure that's much better. The head can live a while after being separated from the body.

I'd use the clove oil to put the fish to sleep. Looks like that page being linked suggests adding vodka after the fish is asleep... just make sure the fish is ASLEEP before adding the vodka. That stuff will STING your fish's gills and eyes.

do people think the fishes fluids freeze instantly and rupture like its spring loaded?
no the fish is dead long before the body fluids freeze and the cells rupture, however it would still be somewhat painfull i imagine because the pain receptors are firing due to a threshold drop in temp.

clove oil or slice his vertebrae just below the head. it kills quickly and is pain free.

Thanks all. Got back a while ago n he was already dead. He was 9.25" long :(

Although i can't confirm this, but i once read that freezing is only really useful for killing fish such as Koi's, since once their body temp drops below a certain point they basically fall asleep, then as the temp drops further they die...
