whats the deal with bichirs and plecos???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My plec was well fed and was about half the size of my sen. He was an A-hole. He always followed my sen around and tried sucking his slimecoat. I thought they were playing until I figured out what the plec was really doing. I got rid of the plec as soon as I found out that plecs were bad for polys and why they are so bad. I wouldn't risk your poly's health if I were you. Poly's are virtually indistructable ...... unless they have no slime coat. I definately wouldn't risk it.

I wouldn't risk it , but the descion is up to you ..... Sounds like a great excuse to get another tank going :D

ok but what species was it? from what ive read so far, pseudas, leporacanthicus, most herbivorous plecs, and scobiancistrus have been kept safely with bichirs.

I've got two small mangos, 3 small leopard frogs, 1 gold nugget (irriri yellow seam), and a flash/emperor/l204 in with my bichirs with no problems.

I am planning to move them to a separate tank though so it's easier to feed them.

L204 are very similar to clowns in diet and behavior, so the clown should be ok witht he bichir then... and from what ive heard from you guys the BN will do ok with them as well... sounds like im good to go.

make sure if large enough and you're feeding a lot of veggies though. mine go through half a zucchini a day.

the 3 plecs that i have are common BN, clown, and whiptail, so i think it will work... worst case scenario, i bring the bichir back to the lfs if i see the plecs rasping on it at all.

You can keep your current plecos with your bichirs as I don't see any common pleco or sailfin pleco.

I've got a common pleco and a clown pleco and neither suck on my polys. It seems that it's entirely up to the fish itself.
