Whats the deal with this fish's color patterns.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
80% water change weekly seems excessive. I'd do 25-40% weekly at most. Is there a reason you're changing out so much water?

I understand the "I love this fish more than my car" too. I'm in the same boat captain.

lol its supposed to look like that

Are you waiting until you get the female Festae before you place the male in the 125? I'm sure he would appreciate the upgrade now but if you are waiting to add the pair at the same time, I understand that too. There are some people that believe that a female Festae should be added to a new tank first to settle in before adding the male. I don't know if this is your logic though.

He looks ready:D. Maybe he trying to tell you he wants a mate. Nothing wrong with him though.

I did originally want the female to be settled in the 125 but I feel bad for this dude. If I don't get a female this week he's going in. I know that they usually change colors but lately it's been very rapid. Hopefully he will calm down a bit in the other tank.

Thank you for the compliments on him. I work hard to keep him happy lol

If you bump his tank every 12 minutes like you did this thread I would say he is stressed out. Otherwise, I would say he looks normal. :D

When you do your water changes do you do the full 80% at once or do you do two 40% water changes? If you are doing it at once then I would cut back to 50% or below. If you do multiple water changes then don't change a thing.

Can anyone tell me why 80% water changes are bad? I've seen this in several threads but is there anything to back it up? As long as the parameters are the same and you're neutralizing chlorine/chloramine, I can't think of any reason it'd be harmful.

All the tanks in my house get at least 75% weekly and that's all at one time. I haven't lost a fish yet. In fact, it usually puts my fish in the mood and I end up with pairs spawning everywhere.

I think consistency is the most important factor. I also change 75% religously every week and my fish seem fine and healthy.
