What's the most aggressive cichlid out there??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well my big dovii did break a 6x2 but I didn't find him awfully aggressive, sure they can be mean but imo nothing compared to a hornet they just want to cause hell all day. Even when I do water changes everything I put in the tank is a target and he wont bite it and let go... bugger keeps pulling on it, he has even taken a chunk out of the otto. none of my dovii do this and I have a few large-med males - females.

I would also put oreochromis high on the list, but they calm down and hype up. Sometimes they can be nutters bashing up every fish in the 550 and most of the time he just relaxes, they pack a bit of size too.

salvinis > cons also imo theres bit of size difference but when salvinis breed they bash up fish much larger and do a lot more damage. My pair constantly bashes the 2 pairs of cons in the tank.

IMHO top 5 most aggressive cichlid
1. Parachromis Dovii-Wolf cichlid
2. Nandopsis Haitiensis-Black Nasty Cichlid
3. Cichlasoma Grammodes-Mini Wolf Cichlid
4. Tilapia Buttikoferi-Hornet Tilapia
5. Amphilophus Labiatus-Red Devil

So far from what I've seen, it's been Hemichromis Fasciatus. No doviis made it out alive. 5 star general does not compare to this fish. Its 100 times more aggressive. Just relentless.

the most consistently agressive cichlid I have had is tilapia buttikoferi.....they don`t have the staying power that a lot of other cichlids have when it comes to fighting, but they generally fight to kill......my one I had years ago (I was naive at the time) was around 10in when I got him, I put him in with 3 12+ in oscars, a 10in jag and a 12+in pleco.....that butti killed all of them on his first night! one oscar was still alive the net morning, but had no scales left on his body, and no fins left! (he didn`t survive obviously) not all buttis are this bad, but from what I have seen and read the majority are very similar! I actually know a guy who had a 14in butti that they had to put in a 300 gallon with his 16in male dovii (the buttis tank cracked) and the butti had murdered the dovii by the next afternoon! my current butti has just had to be split from my main set up due to starting to fight with my larger red devil/midas...luckily I spotted it early enough before I lost my midas/devil, he was severely stressed just by the butti still being in there.
