Whats the most common/average sized monster tank on here?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its funny how over time the trend towards larger and larger tanks is increasing.

when I started fish keeping in 1989, my LFS used to sell only 3 180g tanks per year.

thats was it. and its a big store (Big Al's big box store)

a 90 back then was huge.

now, the same store sells 220's like they are going out of style.

one thing I notice is that tanks up to 125g are fairly common.

150 and up seem to be much rarer.

I believe this is for two reasons:

1. there is a big leap in price. a 150 is a lot more expensive than a 125 because the glass thickness goes up for example.

2. because of this glass thickness increase, the empty tank weight goes way up. an Aqueon 150g for example, weighs 100 pounds more than their 125. which is huge increase when its the same footprint tank..

so they become a lot more difficult to move around..

I see a lot of 125-180's myself. My biggest tank is a 450 gallon. Hopefully soon a 540 gallon

I am going to say 180,220,300,500 and 1,000 gallon tanks are the most common for now. Since we have all been exposed to Arapaimag and a few others, they show that it is possible to have larger tanks than the norm. Since tanks and stands are very expensive for massive tanks, we also have been shown D.I.Y. does wonders with the size, costs and customizing. Just wait until 3,000 and 5,000 gallons becomes the average size!

I was just being born the year you started fish keeping. :D

I'd say 125 or 180. A 125 is a good "big" tank but then if your into it a 180 is next.

If we are just talking about MFKERS then i would say the 125-180 is the most popular. But I'd say the 55/75 would be the most popular tank because to more than half of all fish keepers the 55/75 are moster tanks

When it comes to the most popular/common,I think it would be a 55 or 75. How many people here don't have at least one of them? I have two 55's and two 75's. The biggest I have is a 180,which will need to be upgraded in the next couple of years.
