Whats the one fish you really hate to see in the hobby?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't mind the hybrids, but those tattooed mollies, and the dyed fish need to go. Also, hormone juicing the juvie chiclids needs to stop. My LFS has africans that are about the size of a large neon and are displaying adult colors.

oh yeah. glo fish were bread for cancer and stemcell research because the zebra danio has the unique ability to regrow any part of its body with a cell from anywhere else in its body. the color was added so that you could clearly tell the condition of a diseased fish. and yes the offspring are colored, i have bred them. but i later found out that the company that produces them and has a patent that makes it ilegal to breed them to sell. :(

What is the world coming to! It's not like you are using the same technology to CREATE these fish, they are doing something that you can't stop them from doing short from keeping them in terrible conditions!

tattoed fish. if we keep buying them, china will continue to torture fish.

also, i think we should be able to have any fish that we desire. but i think people somehow need to be held liable for the care of the fish. for example, if you want a redtail cat you must sign saying you will provide it with a home for life. and maybe once a year your tank is inspected for conditions and if not met fines are made and rights revoked if need be. it shouldn't have to be this way, but as long as people consider fish such a low lifeform and lacking a soul, fish will be abused and not be given the respect they reserve. this would also deter impulse buys and make sure dedicated owners with a passion for the hobby are the only ones buying demanding fish.
sorry for the rant, but working at a couple of fish stores really formed a strong opinion about these kinds of things.

"also, i think we should be able to have any fish that we desire." - This I doubt will be something that will ever happen do to the irresponsibility of fishkeepers who tire of a certain fish and release them into the wild or dispose of them in other ways just to be rid of them.

"but i think people somehow need to be held liable for the care of the fish."
If you compare this statement, to the other species of animals who are and have been viciously and seriously abused, like cats, dogs, horses and others, you will see that they are in need of regulating too, but how many of these animals are done this way? None are, in the United States.

"for example, if you want a redtail cat you must sign saying you will provide it with a home for life. and maybe once a year your tank is inspected for conditions and if not met fines are made and rights revoked if need be."
Domesticatd dogs, cats, horses and etc. are brutally abused everyday. And for those who are irresponsible animal owners, abuse and torture these animals by whatever means, and are the most who go unpunished. Very few are prosecuted and go to jail, do community service for extended periods of time or at all, or are heavily fined. So far to my knowledge, anyone who has been found guilty, has never been denied the priveledge, of animal ownership even for a short period of time, 6 months to 5 years. It should be a denied priveledge, of any animal ownership for 25 years to life. And it's truly sad, because an animal can not speak up for itself. Who comes to an animal owners property or house to do a health and welfare check-up on dogs, cats or horses. It only happens if you call a vetrinarian for livestock farm animals. All others are taken in to a hospital or clinic by "responsible animal owners". Animal abuser's do not care. So because of the lack of monetary resources, manpower, jail space, court availability . . . rights being revoked will become a faerie tail, a rumor, a myth and will definitely be non-exhistant.

Goldfish.

Because they are so cheap. Because people always remember keeping them in bowls when they were kids (and they always died, cheap fish). Because they grow to a foot in length and require a lot of tankspace and rarely get it. Because they can outproduce an oscar's waste. Because they are seen and given away as carnival prizes. Because people decided to breed them to have no dorsal fins (who needs steering!), bubble cheeks (that can pop fatally) or worse. Because they are sold as feeder fish, are harbringers of disease and death to such feedee fish, and because they are so cheap, any kid with a buck can get a dozen to stomp on in the pet store parking lot and no one will care.
