Ever had any smart fish? I recently got a dat and he seems pretty bold- sitting at front of tank surrounded by bigger tankmates. He only hides when I go to take a pic of him. Makes me think he is teasing me and possibly is smarter than I am. I also like the way oscars are so involved with what is going on outside of their tank. I have had a couple (and have one now) that are as close to dogs that fish can get. Also had a RTC that acted like an oscar occasionally.

I got to say Oscar. It's the Bill Murray of the fish world. The young Dovii im keeping now is interesting too, seems like he's more curious than your average fish. He reads a lot. Existentialist stuff, Nietszche, Camus. He's a real bummer.

i have a green terror who seens pretty intelligent. also she acts just like a girl- she has sas

I would say the fish with the most personality I had was Jaws, I believe he was an African Green Cichlid about the size of your hand.

Great fish, I dont think I will ever find another like him.

He lived alone in a 55 gallon aquarium, he would kill anything living that entered his space.

How do you know how big my hand is? Are you watching me?

A friend's chocolate cichlid always intrigued me, mostly because he seemed intrigued by me. Most of the time he would be in his log hiding, but when I came through the room he would come out to watch me and see what I was doing.

Another is a larger Green Terror that was for sale in a good quality LFS. I'd go weekly to the store to see the new selection and I swear that GT recognized me. He was there for 2 months before he sold and he'd always come right to the glass and do a little dance whenever I put my head down by his tank (knee level). He'd follow my head from one end of the tank to the other and back. He just seemed so playful and intelligent. It had me wondering who was playing with who.

I gotta agree about the Oscars, I have a young pair Manson and Monroe and I swear they get smarter every day. If they could walk around on land I would really be concerned..lol

Surely some ichthyologist out there has done some research on cichlid intelligence.

i had a large mouth bass that was super personable, also he always seemed to be watching me. probably just associated me with food.
