Didn't really want to comment on a 3 year old thread but ...
I doubt it's a firecon;
1) it doesn't have the body shape of a firecon, which is more rounded like a convict in every unfortunate one I have seen and more importantly ...
2) none of the various convict species aren't native to mexico. Given it was pulled in from the wild, I seriously doubt it's a firecon.
It just looks like a firemouth with excess melanin to me. Mutants are far more likely than natural hybrids in CA/SA cichlids. Especially with a cichlid that's not found in the same area.
And that's before the mexican cichlid experts came to the same conclusion 3 years ago on another site.
near mexican border,,he was on travel in central amerca,,im gonna ask him what river it was
it is a thorichtys,,
first time ive seen it i was thinking thorichtys meeki x archocentrus nigrofasciatus..but there not spawning with eachother?
Do you mean Mexican/US border? Convicts aren't found in Mexico, and most wild cichlid sp. don't interbreed.
I think it is a regular firemouth. Everyone is so quick to say hybrid, because they don't understand that there are so many different varriations because of the geographic locations which the fish addapt to. This means colors will be different and even body shapes.
