All of my local LFS (LFSes, LFS's? whatever) seem to be catering their business toward people wanting the biggest baddest fish they can find. Multiple times ive heard the line "thats the meanest one we got" seal the deal on a purchase. Dont get me wrong, im not going all PETA on you guys and i love the fact that my jag or bullhead could one day eat my girlfriends chihuahua but i wouldnt actually do it. I dont really know what im ranting about, it just seems like too many people around here are in the hobby for the wrong reason. Somehow i blame michael vick for this one lol.

Fortunately you'll see very little of that on here but I see what you mean.I used to work in a pet store and we always got customers who wanted to see the pirahnas tear something up or some other gladitorial spectacle. Those were the people most likely to by a fish fish for the showoff or cool factor,I got tired of it and am glad sites like this one came along, where people seem to care for and about their pets and take the hobby seriously.

Well here were i live in Massachusettes,Springfield to be exact all the LFS's seem to cater to are the smaller office desk type tanks and fish ie; guppies swordtails etc,Saltwater is getting really big now around here,so all i can find around here in my interest area are Dempseys, convicts and Oscars.

Those fish were the best sellers at the store I worked at.That was the bread and butter stuff.

i dont see the problem with a person wanting the meanest one of the bunch. if i am picking out a cichlid, i want the dominant one out of the pack.

Well good to hear its not like that everywhere. But you guys are spot on with stores fish stock, its either super-aggressive-man-eating-cichlid, or a guppy tank.

Hey nothing wrong with that, per se (hee hee south park...) if youre standard is: mean = healthy and strong. Its the people buying mean fish based on their reputation just to take them home, poke at em with a stick, starve them, and then throw in some feeders when their buddys are over just to see the scales fly. The whole things a little too primal for my tastes i guess.

Many people start of like that, eventually it gets old though.

For my first tank I just wanted monsters, mice eating, flesh tearing beasts. After a while you get tired of your RBPs doing a number on any fish you try to keep.

Now I just keep whatever fish I like, Im even thinking of getting some loaches, they're awesome

Eye on the TV Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor It happens to be
Like:
"Killed by the husband"
"Drowned by the ocean"
"Shot by his own son"
"She used a poison in his tea And kissed him goodbye"
That's my kind of story.
It's no fun 'til someone dies

Don't look at me like I am a monster
Frown out your one face But with the other
Stare like a junkie Into the TV
Stare like a zombie While the mother holds her child,
Watches him die Hands to the sky crying,
"Why, oh why!"

Cause I need to watch things die From a distance
Vicariously, I Live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.
