Help me out, what does my red hook silver dollar have? How do I treat him. I have him in a quarantine tank right now and I'm treating him with kanaplex. He is also very scared. When I come near the tank he flipps out, but thankfully he is eating.

i dont know..i would'nt think its disease...any other symptoms? scratching etc? maybe add a little salt next water change.

Jake, please add more details. See further info below quote.
1. What is the size of your tank?

2. What are your water parameters? State the brand of test kit used.

3. Is your aquarium set up freshwater or brackish water?

4. How long the aquarium has been set up?

5. What fish do you have? How many are in your tank? How big are they? How long have you had them?

6. Were the fish placed under quarantine period (minus the first batch from the point wherein the tank is ready to accommodate the inhabitants)?

7. What temperature is the tank water currently?

8. Are there live plants in the aquarium?

9. What filter are you using? State brand, maintenance routine and power capacity.

10. Any other equipment used (aside from heater and filter which are two very important components of the tank)?

11. Does your aquarium receive natural sunlight at any given part of the day? What is your lighting schedule (assuming you do not rely on sunlight for our viewing pleasure)?

12. When did you perform your last water change and how much water was changed? How often do you change your water? Do you vacuum the substrate?

13. What foods do you provide your fish? What is the feeding schedule?

14. What unusual signs have you observed in your fish?

15. Have you treated your fish ahead of diagnosis? If so, what treatments did you use? State your reasons for planning ahead of proper diagnosis.

16. Insert photos of fish in question and full tank shot if necessary.

This is not velvet. Did you ever point a flashlight on it? Does it have golden speckles around?

If the fish is obviously eating heartily and poop no other than plain brown or green depending on the color of the food, I personally should leave that alone and keep watch. No antibiotics or any meds UNTIL you figure out the ACTUAL issue.

1. What is the size of your tank? -- 90 gallon main, 20 gallon qt

2. What are your water parameters? API 0 ammonia, I lost my other cards and need to find them but I am 100% sure it's fine in the main tank... as for the 20 - 1 ammonia (I am doing 70% water changes and adding bacteria). PH was 8, now at 7.4

3. Is your aquarium set up freshwater or brackish water? Freshwater

4. How long the aquarium has been set up? 90 - 4-6 months, 20 - 4 weeks

5. What fish do you have? How many are in your tank? How big are they? How long have you had them? all my other fish are fine, but my rh sd's are both not well (only one is in the qt).

-Pleco
-Raphael Cat
-2 Spotted SD
-2 RH SD

7. What temperature is the tank water currently? 90 was at 83 for a week, now both are at 74

8. Are there live plants in the aquarium? no

9. What filter are you using? State brand, maintenance routine and power capacity. 90 - magnum 350 and an off brand eheim (I do need to clean these filters), 20 - sponge filter

11. Does your aquarium receive natural sunlight at any given part of the day? What is your lighting schedule (assuming you do not rely on sunlight for our viewing pleasure)? no, 90 - 10 hrs a day, 20 - 5 hrs a day or less

No flashlight test... I will do that when I get home... Both of my RH stopped eating for about 4 days and then started again. I have NEVER seen either of them poop the whole 4-6 month I've owned them. (they like their privacy). For the last 5 days I have not treated either tank with anything and activated carbon is in both tanks.

Use this for your test kits in case you lost the cards. There are plenty of charts featured there.

I still can't find anything wrong with that fish. The only reason a fish would get skittish is because your quarantine tank is not having adequate number of hiding places that would make it feel more secured. Silver dollars are very skittish by nature. It's not going to help you pin down the actual issue so you may have to ignore this type of behavior unless it starts thrashing around which would be more concerning

Is the quarantine tank barebottom? Keep it barebottom and provide some thickets of live plants. Your silver dollar may nibble on it so try to replace them as they get destroyed. This is one way to calm it down though and allow it to eat so you can eventually observe for stool appearance.

do you think i should put him back into the 90 gallon? The 90 gallon has no decorations at all right now and I might keep it that way so I might have to sell my sd's.

There isn't anything wrong with your fish. It's up to you though if you want to return it. Yes, you can return it to the main tank.
