whats wrong with my aro?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

chlorine- 0
kh- 20 ppm
pH- 6.8

the tank was up with the cascade for about a week, we didnt really get the chance to cycle it fully, circumstances were quite unfortunate. i just realized we did hook up the fluval too soon without backup colonized media.

we've done a few water changes of about 15-30% since then.

the tank is a 75 gallon long, but thats just for now, because we are in the process of building a 300 gal. acrylic. there is currently nothing in the tank, no substrate, no decorations. my fiance wants to keep it simple. the background is just black.

we use stress zyme and stress coat at the beginning and with each water change. when we first put him in, we added aquarium salt to keep the stress of the travel low.

i just realized that you guys are probably right in thinking that the tank has been cycling because it makes sense to me since he started acting this way when we changed out the filter.:nilly:

I'm gussing this is the problem. Go to the LFS and buy some bottled bacteria. Jars are pretty tough, so he should be ok in a month or so. In the meantime try hooking up that old filter again, it might help the cycle. GL ;)

do you have any air stones in the tank . if he is just hovering at the intake you might wanna stick a air stone in to see if it helps

we already gave away the old cascade.

and we tried the airstone on a few occassions, he didnt really seem to enjoy that too much.

i will try the bb maybe that will help.

thanks guys :)

You need to keep ammonia and nitrite levels low for the health of the fish. Is the aro the only fish in the tank?

Best bet is the Marineland brand "Bio Spira" this may be hard to find and should've been kept refriderated, before you buy it. Add this directly into the filter intake, not just into the tank.

Buy a good quality test kit and test daily for ammonia and nitrites. If either is above .25ppm do a 25% water change and dose with Seachem brand "Prime". If the levels get above 1 ppm do a 50% Water change and dose with prime. The prime will make the ammonia and nitrites non toxic for the fish. For the first week or two this could mean alot of water changes, but will insure the health of the fish. If the aro is the only fish then you will have a much easier time at this. When feeding try to remove any uneaten food, uneaten food will only lead to an increase in ammaonia.

I'm sure that there will others that will tell you that increased water changes will slow the cycling process, this may or may not be true. Your main interest should be for the health of the fish though. Keep up with the testing though when you see you nitrates increase then you know you tank is on the way to being cycled.

But aren't all arows a little skiddish at that age? Mine took forever to start eating *like a week* but then I just put a bunch of ghost shrimp for him to eat and he went nutz! to each his own diff arow diff complex G/L

Maybe so, but it's obvious he has and uncycled tank and should deal with that accordingly.

Thing about is that people get "ansy" and use abunch of that *Cycle* to speed it up. The only thing bad about that is that the fish are exsposed to the cycle and its like a steroid to them. Should let it happen kinda naturally.

Unless you mean just let it cycle naturally

I think if you read post #15 you will know what I mean.

okay we got the bb and a new test kit, the api freshwater master test kit.

the thing is the guy at my lfs is a guy i trust, he told me not to feed it anything but pellets or sticks to get him trained to eat those. and to only give him live foods as a treat? i was thinking on trying feeder guppies or the ghost shrimp buuuuut he told me this so now i dunno...

oh and btw im a girl :irked: lol.
