whats wrong with my aro?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh and he is the only fish in the tank. we were considering getting him a tankmate or two, but decided against it, and ammo lvl is less then .5 atm. no3 and no2 are both next to nothing as well.

Yes live feeders are not a great idea, there are many freeze dried and frozen foods you can offer as well.

With your water params, as cycling goes on you will see your ammonia be at high levels(as it is now) then your nitrites(No2) will spike and finally the nitrates(No3) will increase.

Until cycled don't add any other fish. What brand BB di you go with?

BTW welcome to MFK, it is nice to see more girls in the hobby:)

i used superbac nitrifying bacteria? the guy at the lfs said it was pretty good. it was also the only kind they had.

the thing is, the nitrates are higher then the nitrites atm is that normal?

i have other tanks and none of my other fish are having problems. on the other hand i cycled them all for at least two weeks, or in a couple cases i insta-cycled by switching colonized foam from one filter to the next. and everyone is doing fine.

its just him.

see, when we got him, he was pretty sad looking, and for some reason it isnt too easy to get any other kind of aros except for silvers, and my fiance was not at all interested in the silvers, because he had a RTG back when he lived in the philipines and theyre kind of illegal here :P but ANYWAY. hes missing a barbel, will it grow back? the base isnt damaged but i think they were nipped at by the others he was transported with. his fins were a tad bit frayed as well, but have since healed up.

okay im going on and on but i just want to make sure that hes going to be okay because hes become a dear member of our fish collection.

oh btw, thanks for the welcome :D

Ideal water params are zero ammonia, zero nitrites and keep the nitrates under 30ppm with water changes. Are you familiar with the nitrogen cycle?

:WHOA:yeah im familiar with the nitrogen cycle lol. i work at the lfs. this is just the first aro ive kept and im just not 100% familiar with their behavior.

ive been really pushing the sticks and pellets and a few minutes ago he sort of nibbled on one but then zoomed right back down to his spot near the intake. i think hes interested, so i dont want to take the pellets out, ive looked it up towards a lot of different refrences that say to take them out in 30 minutes, or to take them out the next morning. ive never had a fish that was THIS picky. so am i ok with my hunch to just leave them in overnight n just scoop them tomorrow morning if he doesnt eat them??:nilly:

Sorry the comment you made(posted below) made me think you did not understand the "Nitrogen Cyle"

dont feed live fish.. especially to young aros, their health resistance are not as strong as to a 1yr. old aro.. best is to feed pellets, market shrimp (sharp parts peeled off) is another alternative food for him.. never feed live, u will enjoy that monster eating live fishes when he gets bigger, but for now, pellets will do and some market shrimp..

another thing, f u would plan to clean you filter, just dont touch your bio set-up, you would just want to clean the mechanical filtration in it.. but thats all.. but i think you already know this since you work at an LFS before

haha yeah sorry, it was late. i meant that the nitrites was higher than the ammonia when i tested with the api kit. i realized i didnt wait long enough for the results, i redid it and everything turned out making sense.

i did decide to go against the guppies for now, im probably just gonna go with making him some of those aro *shrimp rolls* ive been hearing so much about.

hes still not eating the pellets or the sticks so im heading out to the grocery store today.

oh btw does anyone know if his barbel will grow back? the base isnt damaged that i can see, and i was just wondering if anyone knew.

thanks for all the help guys.
