Got it! He's only breathing out of the left side...

I've been observing (obsessing) for some time and he's only breathing out of his left side. The right gills do not move AT ALL. Does he lose color and collapse like this due to lack of oxygen?

have you done the things that people have continued to recommend?
he is starting to die.

You need to move the cons out ASAP. I would turn off the tank lights so he won't stress as much. At this point, there isn't much you can do. I don't want to sound like a butt hole but this is what happens when you keep too many fish in small, underfiltered tanks.

I'd get ahold of some clove oil.

I'm not sure what people are saying. He's in horrible shape...because the left side of his gills aren't moving. If you look at the photo, the gills on his right side are open while the left side stays immobile. I'm certain this is why he loses color and won't move or eat. Any solutions to help heal his gills?

Please give it up with the bullying and toxic water thing. Does anyone have anything to offer besides belittling me?

We've all told you what's wrong. I'm not sure why you won't listen, it isn't parasites, it isn't lack of o2, it's your TOXIC water complimented by a hoard of convicts in a 55g with absolutely zero cover. Quit ignoring us and thinking every member who posted is somehow less knowledgeable then you and your vast experience and intelligence.

The ignorance of some people..

Why not take the advice about moving the convicts? People on here have alot of experience im sure thats why you posted here but you wont try what the majority of people have suggested. It looks to be to late though. Best of luck in the future

you have it completely backwards.
his gills are shutting down BECAUSE he is in bad shape. then pretty soon the right side gills will stop too, because he is dying.
dead things don't breathe at all.

nobody has bullied you.
it's your oscar that's been bullied to death by convicts and poor water.
everybody would've remained patient if you took appropriate action, but you keep denying the obvious.

You O is being bullied. In the second to last picture you can see there has been scrapping going on by looking at the dorsal fin. It is tattered.
The slight pock marks on the forehead can indicate poor water quality.
A Oscar in a good quality Enviroment will grown one to two inches a month for the first six months when they pass there juvenile stage.
Ammonia/ nitrite are not present in a fully cycled tank. Nitrate becomes toxic for fish at 40ppm, toxic to humans at 50ppm.
These things are working against you boss. I have had my O for 8 years and we have had some tuff battles but she is still with me.
One O (13inch) in a 75 gallon planted tank. I know a little about O's cause I love em.

Get rid of the cons, do a couple w/c, turn off the lights, and listen to your fellow fish enthusiast. I would not introduce meds at this point. Change the Enviroment and see what happens. After that establish a good diet and work on feeding.

Ps we are all just trying to help.
