What's your media in an Aquaclear 110

Yeah, I like the double sponge idea. Hagen sent this big ass foam block. Guess two of dem joints would work good. Anybody use anything different for bio media? Like, some man said he used plastic army soldiers he bought from the dollar tree for bio filtration. Crazy stuff man.

Bb or beneficial bacteria will grow on almost any surface, as death said you need porous media, this will allow the bb to colonize and take up minimum space, I bet it would take 1k army men to house the equivalent of 1 single ceramic ring....

If your looking for cheapo options, you could even use 2 sponges, 1 for mechanical and the other for bio, just don't ever wash one, simply rinse it in tank water, or even pot scrubbies work well and are cheap. Personally api chem stars are my favorite, I've tried a lot of different bio, it all does the same, how ever densely packed media will slow gph down, that's why in my fx5 I run chem stars.

well im going to hit the dollar general and see what they have. maybe ill go creative and get like a bag of marbles for the filter or something haha!

With biological bacteria you want to increase surface area for the bacteria to colonize on. That is why porous sponges work well such as pot scrubbers, bio balls, etc. the ceramic rings which are made for ac filters have microscopic pores which increase this surface area in a very small volume. Lava rock is commonly used as bio media because it is porous however from what I've read it goes ceramic rings, sponges/ bio balls, and lastly lava rock. Standard rocks are too flat and don't have enough surface area, you will have the same problem with marbles.

Has anyone notice a water clarity issue when u place bio on the bottom and sponge on top? I do this for quick sponge cleaning but have alot of small debis in tank and brown water.

Do you have any mechanical filtration. I guess the sponge is supposed to be but I add filter fluff for some more fine cleaning. I just add a little on the top and replace it weekly. I only rinse the sponge monthly.
