What's your "odd couple" (inseparable/not breeders)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So lets take this a step further, post why you think these odd matches in fish tolerate, accompany or protect one another. With the obvious reasons like breeding/offspring out of the picture why do they do what they do? Protection from predetors, sharing of dominant roles, cohabitation in natural habitat etc...???

Evojoey started a good thread about his geos defending his ray which got me researching nuclear-feeding association. One of the reasons I started this thread, to find different reasons and types of fish with odd husbandry and why.

My EBJD and my salvinixfiremouth have pair up.

I wish I still had her. Nicest looking sax type pike I have ever owned. One of those fish I regret selling :( Thanks Ryan.

Caught my aggro female apisogramma nisjenni sharing her cave with a polka dot loach yesterday. Male hates the loaches, female likes one in particular. Go figure. They both hate corys. :(

I used to have a feeder goldfish in with my 13" adult Oscar.
The Oscar ate all the other feeders but wouldn't eat this particular fish for some reason.
They were together for about 6-7 months but the goldfish started to eat all the food I put in the tank so I had to move him.
The goldfish ended up at a friends place in his outdoor koi pond.

my senegal bichir and a mealworm. The bichir never even attempt to bite the mealworm. Just probe around with its nostrils. Well the mealworm died from suffocation anyways...

If only they have gills

This one is not odd but my oscar and parrot fish. In my other tank my hybrid convict with my jellybean parrot. They are ALWAYS together, it's so cute.

When I had them (RIP) My YoYo Loach and 4" Discus.
YoYo (aka Chester the Molester) would always swim with the Discus (aka Hector) would always swim around and follow and basically rape Hector. He would always swim fast in his loach-like manner and be on him and around him. Hector didn't mind being molested. In fact I think he liked it :)

It was pretty fun to watch and always happened, and never seemed to stress the Discus.
