Whats your PH at for ray tank??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
7.8-8.0 out of the tap. Tank is usually at 7.8.

It's good your parameters are still OK and a pH of 5.5 on its own will not hurt your rays unless the biological filter quits working. What type of ammonia test kit do you have - does it measure total ammonia or only free ammonia? As long as it's measuring total ammonia you can safely raise the pH.
Half a cup of crushed coral will probably not make any difference, I tried using much more than that and it was unable to contend with the Kh reduction caused by the filter, which is why I've switched to using baking soda.

WOW Thats low PH for tap water. Mine comes out at 7.5 and I wish mine were a tad lower around 6.5-6.8 as I have Discus. Crushed coral to raise....I use drift wood to lower.

I thought that myself, i have a mate who lives about 2 miles away and his PH from tap is 7.6.

Actualy its got me thinking the PH kit is out somewhere, can they go out of date for use?

The test kit is a NUTRAFIN AMMONIA.

I am thinking of using the 35g tank i am getting for the water changes and prepping it for the changes so its all set for pumping into the main tank. I will either get some baking soda or CC in the morning as i doing a WC tomorrow night.

Got to say, i am sat here watching the rays fly around the tank now its lights out, they love sliding up the glass to the top, always come to life even more when the lights are dimmed:)

Oh YES they go out of date...a lot.

They have use by dates printed on them.

Try another kit and if still low you might want to contact the water company...there are legal parameters and something bad could be affecting your water...and you!

mine is a steady 8.0 all the time.
the worst part is the hard water stains on the dishes. so irritating.

You can add an electrical device to the water system which wraps the copper pipe work and adds some ion?.. To the water and stops the lime scale sticking to things. My office runs a water softener which also softens my outside hot and cold taps for washing the car but softened water should not be used like this for fish.

Hi again mate, i as you mite now from the other thread, i got some CC today from the LFS, not that far down the road, while i was there i asked them what there PH was and theres is also 5.5, strange thing is a lad i know who lives inbetween me and the LFS has a tap water of 7.2......weird. Unless he has less of clue than me LOL

It is very odd BUT my office is built on the same land as my house and whn I built it I laid on a new supply of water, gas and elec.

The water to the office is very different in pressure and quality to the main house, it think therefore there is more than water source or water main...probably old and new.....

It is worth contacting the water board as the uk have to hit certain perameters.
