Who likes hybrids?

I feel petshops or any other place selling fish, should be required to label all hybrids they sell. It's not fair to people who don't want hybrids for whatever reason.

I like hybrids as long they are healthy and happy..No twisty parrot cichlids. I suppose I like hybrids for the same as any other fish I might choose.
No special love for hybrids nor any dislike of them. Unless they are like parrot cichlids.
I have a syno cat I think is a hybrid.

Any serious community realises the damage that hybrids and hybridisation can and already has caused to the hobby. Regardless of how good you think they look, they are slowly eating into what little is left of the integrity of this hobby.

It's unnatural enough that you cram species from different continents into the smallest glass box they can or can't possibly fit them in, but deliberately crossing them with other species hoping to hit some sort of gold mine and play god really does cross the line. They may look 'cool' to some people, but if you honestly need some wicked artificial cross between species to find a species you fall in love with you don't belong in the hobby, and should probably get yourself tested for ADHD or similar attention disorders.

With so many undiscovered and undescribed species out there from all continents, how could you possibly think that crossing your own is good for the hobby? Hybrids have been added to my list of reasons not to shop at stores, alongside dyed and tattooed fish. The real stores out there with policies regarding hybrids know what the deal is.

i think hybrids may be ok as long as they dont end up with all sorts of problems from it like parrot fish.
some hybrids like flowerhorns are incredibly beautiful fish but there is also something similar in the hobby already aka trimac. its just as nice and its pure. so why make a virtual copy of it if it already exists. nature did fine on its own.
i agree with Japes about it slowly eroding the pure breeds in the hobby, look at trying to get a pure midas or red devil or trimac. some shops sell FH's as trimacs. this is not good for the hobby and leads to numerous people claiming they have a pure blood and when they breed it they water the genes down even further and the end result is zero pure breeds apart from wild caught fish.
its a touchy subject to some and i would bet a months wages this will thread will get abusive and silly as does all the other "how you feel about hybrids" threads.

The thing is there is no way to control how much hybridization people do to avoid defects. If you eliminate darwins theory you end up with weak poorly "designed" or "Naturally selected" creatures.

Its like in dogs. Pugs almost always have respiratory issues due to being breed for their "interesting" smashed and smooshed face.

My point is that hybridization is fine if done on your own under your control and the fish are kept by you. Its when they are given out to the public where they are miss labeled or re bred with another fish that you have a problem. We have removed survival of the fittest so eventually we will end up with the weakest poorest mutts of fish one could imagine...assuming things really got bad.

We dont need anymore of this

Went with I don't care on this one. There are many hybrids I like.

The thing I have against hybrids is stuff like: If you want to get a trimac, you'll almost always end up with low grade fh's. Basically they are bad for the gene pool if you want a pure fish. Some people don't label hybrids as hybrids, such as the rd/midas. Peeps try to pass off low grade fh as trimacs, etc etc. If any of my fish hybridize, I feed the fry to my other fish.

I can understand people liking flowerhorns though, I just don't like the fact that hybrids often end up making the fish that are available in the hobby, unpure.

deffinately. the hobby is being invaded by hybrids:WHOA:

:iagree::iagree::iagree::grinyes: right on the money! thanks a lot.

I don't really mind, except for blood parrots. I despise those.

I really am not into hybrids even though I know how to look for water Kok identifying the female etc, i'm more of an oddball kind of person.
Even a friend of mine wanted to gave me a high class flowerhorn as a gift but I told him "what will i gonna do with that?"
