under a bridge in fl
some people say it will only take a few days to rust out of a fishes mouth.
some say it will take weeks.

i think it would take weeks to over a month or two to rust out in saltwater.
in freshwater i think it would take longer, like a few months or more.

lets hear your opinions on this.

and in the mean time i will start an experiment.
i have 2 matching tupperwares
same amount of water
one i added a bunch of aquarium salt to it
the other freshwater only
then i got 2 bronze colored hooks and 2 silver ones
added one of each color to each type of water.
lets see how long it takes to even start rusting.
"just added them now so start the clock :grinno: "

anyone have comments on the experiment?
like would a current speed up the process?
any other factors that might speed it up or change things?

That "hook will rust out" thing is bogus. Might fall out.

Might fall out.
if its in a good chunk of meat it probably would never just "fall"out.
in a bass mouth where it rips a big hole it might fall out
but not in a tongue, throat,so on.
:irked:

but some fish swallow hooks and the stomach acid might help
ya for the ones that get swallowed stomach acid might speed it up.
but most get hooked before that point.

"ps:im not against fishing and this experiment/comments will not make me quit fishing"
lol :grinno:

I find hooks still attached to line that are easily more than just a few months old... And still look new...

If i don't get my hook back or the fish starts bleeding then I finish the job :) As the fish in my opinon is dead anyways after that.. I have yet to catch one and find a hook while gutting. SO my opinon is either the fish got smart or died. The latter of the two more likely. Though I have caught a fishing pole i lost a couple days befofre and the fish was still there, lip hooked and fighting.

This is strictly my own opinion.

The hook will rust out, but it is more over a period of months rather than days.

For a salt water bottom feeding fish such as a flathead (Saltwater Species of fish in Australia), they ran a test where a flathead had been caught with a hook stuck in it's mouth. It was still silver. They put it in captivity in a large tank which simulated it's habitat of natural rocks. The hook did rust away, but came out more with the fish foraging for food and dislodging it on a rock rather than it rusting out.

Another point made here - What if it's stainless steel?

the hooks i use rust out in about a month i did this test for fw. i use the hooks that are 90 cents for 100 at walmart, number 8s. but i almost never leave a hook in unless i cant get it with out mangaling the fish.

loooooong time to rust out for those im guessing.
not sure why they would make ss hooks now that i think about it. :irked:

you sure its not 10 bucks for a hundred?
never seen a hook that cost one cent.
im going to check that out next time im there.lol
ive seen 10 packs for a buck but not a hundred for a buck.lol
:)

It depends on the hook and the water. Stainless hooks don't rust out at all. In salt water the bronzed kind should corrode enough to fall apart after a few weeks, at least that has been my experience.
