whats your take on "the hook will rust out in a few days" saying

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I believe it depends on the hook what it's made of there are different types of hooks some maybe stronger than others.

another thing to remember, rusting is caused by oxygen in the water, when i fish has it in there mouth there is alot more water going over that hook then the same deli cup of water with the hooks just sitting in. i think that would help with moving fresh water.

haha now to contradict myself. i fish a small acre pond with lots of bass in it. i used to fish it every 2 or 3 days. early that spring i caught 2 different bass about 14 or 15 inches each with fresh hooks in there throats, ( i know they were different cause one on the top and one on the bottom). over the summer i caugth each of those bass several times and by the fall when i caught them i still could see the hooks in the mouth.they wernt bronze but im not sure what type of hooks they were because they wernt the type i used but they deffinitly didnt go anywhere

I caught an oscar in Hawaii with a rusted out hook sticking out of it's butt. Passed it all the way through. (Eww.)

As you've found out, some rust out faster than others. And salt water should rust them faster than salt (I don't know the specific gravity you have it at).

I've seen pictures of people wreck fishing for Jewfish in florida, huge groupers with 2,3 even 5 hooks in their mouths, they rush back into the ship wreck and the line is cut.

It actually will rust a little, but it will come lose and fall out through its normal swimming / eating habit.

ALSO... Flatten the barb. Its what I do, makes it a little harder to land fish, you lose some now and then, but when you get used to how you have to handle the fish you won't have any problems

gotta to use uncoated hooks....

if you cant remove the hook before release use a heavy duty cutter and snip the shank in half.....

when shark fishing we used to use a cable cutter to cut the big hooks !!

then between falling out....being rusted by the acids in the fish's system they have a pretty good chance
