whats your take on "the hook will rust out in a few days" saying

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If every one would use circle hook's , the odd's of fish being released with hook's in there mouth's would be reduced dramaticlly.

circle hook's don't allow the fish to be gut hooked, it take some finess to land one but it's worth it in the end for the fish's well being.:D

I caught an oscar in Hawaii with a rusted out hook sticking out of it's butt. Passed it all the way through. (Eww.)
As you've found out, some rust out faster than others. And salt water should rust them faster than salt (I don't know the specific gravity you have it at).
if i get you,lol
actually from my studies they both started rusting at the same time.
and are rusting the same still.
i thought it would rust faster in salt too.
If you want to test it properly, put an airstone.
would if i had a spare one.lol
i have gutted fish with a hooks in them.
never seen that one :)
but it will come lose and fall out through its normal swimming / eating habit.
ya i figured that helps sometimes.
gotta to use uncoated hooks....

if you cant remove the hook before release use a heavy duty cutter and snip the shank in half.....

when shark fishing we used to use a cable cutter to cut the big hooks !!

then between falling out....being rusted by the acids in the fish's system they have a pretty good chance
good tips :)

you still can lose a circle hook.lol

I always thought it was bs good to know the hooks actually rust.I started flattening the barbs when my sons started fishing, for safty, now I do it on my hooks too makes unhooking fish a snap.

Hey Ross when I go striper fishing in Long Island Sound the first time I tried a circle hook. First fish was hooked in the throat and the next fish was hooked in tongue. My favorite hook is the octopous hooks I haven't had a gut hook in a long time.

The secret to using circle hoohs is DON"T set the hook. no jerk is required, just a firm, steady pressure.

A story the UK carp anglers might like, my father caught a carp in Cornwall which was probably only about 6lbs at a commercial fishery, with a rig in it's mouth. He took that rig out and caught many many other fish on it, including his personal best at the time of 28.5lbs. I once lost a fluorocarbon rig and twenty minutes later hooked and caught the same fish that I just lost, complete with rig. That was in France. I don't know about hooks rusting out, but I like to think they do :P Although it is commonplace to see fish dragging line and even weights/floats.

bronze,
still rusting.pulled them out,the coating is rusting, alot of the rust wipes off.
still strong as new tho.

alum,
looks like one is rusting,i know alum doesnt rust, but it doesnt wipe off so no clue.

still not close to "rusting out" but we will keep testing it.lol
think i should change the water?
cant add air and dont want to do this in a tank.lol

"looked at the pic again"
the salt water hook is looking more rusty.

Eventually the hook will rust out. Its breaking down so it has to eventually happen. But the fish would most likely have dislodged it in normal activities.

Its easier for the hook to be pulled out backwards if there is a barb so I'm guessing it gets worked out in reverse, or gets caught on something and pulled out backwards.

This of couse would mean the point is not dug into the flesh, so it would have had to have worked itself out from that point.

Whatever the case...I don't worry about it. People put all sorts of hooks and crap in their mouth and lips and they still live.
