Most of the Fish & Game laws are purposeful and are there for good cause. Unfortunately, 90% or so of the people who consider themselves in the hobby (10g community tanks, goldfish bowls, etc.) do not adhere to the ethics that the rest of us do. It is disturbing to know how many people actually think it is ok for the final destination of pet fish to be in public water ways.

For those of us who view fish ownership as a full life cycle responsibility, bending the law is a victimless crime. In other words "don't know, don't care, don't tell".

You mean I can't put my fish in the local river :uhoh:. I thought I only had to keep my Oscars until they outgrow my 20gal, then I put them in the river? This is not how you guys do it?
Is it ok if I climatise them to the river water by floating the bag first?

Sure, whatever you say. Just make sure you release them with plenty of feeders so they don't go hungry. :D :banhim:

if you cant keep them for a reason i.e. endangered - hate them.
if it's because they are there for a good reason e.g. to stop them becoming a non-native pest - kinda still hate em.
if there is no reason what so ever for a law being in place, then people can keep what they want.
However unfortunately because of the "cool" factor of keeping something illegal, they are the same type of people that will then release as they grow bored of it.

what's the penalty like if someone does keep illegal fish such as pirahna's?? just

I varys from place to place but no doubt they would take the fish and you would be faced with a fine of some sort.

That's terrific for you, but here in Hawaii we can barely own guppys legally. That said, I will own whatever fish I want that I can get. If the fish is illegal because it's on the endagered species list like the asian arowana, I will not seek to own it. If it is illegal because of our favorable tropical climate, I don't really give a s#$t.

Hawaii does have some intense laws, but it is understandable. It's a tropical island, isolated from the rest of the world. Lots of aquarium fish can survive in Hawaii's waters and a lot do. You may not be able to go out and buy one but there are plenty you can catch. According to the list I looked at on fishbase Hawaii only has like seven native freshwater fish and something like 50 non-natives. You got managuensis, Midas, oscars, convicts, goldfish, peacock bass, Jewel cichlid, Banded leporinus, tilapia, mollies and guppies, needlenose gar...the list goes on and they all got there because of the aquarium trade no doubt so I can fully understand Hawaii's laws.

hey people, i live in the uk, and as far as i am awhare we have kinda lax laws on fish, i am not presonaly aware of any thing other than gm fish that are band in the uk... thou most of you guys do get 2 keep pitbulls... if the fish is endangered or wild caught it should however not be kept by a person! unless under conditions like, i found it wild with termianal fin rot n completely nursed it back to health... i think the issue still should lie with wild vs capive bred fish the later being the only exceptable option for a pet.

i dont really care i dont have many illegal fish that i want besides snake heads but theres lots of other things i can get instead so it doesnt bother me
