For the most part, I think it's their problem. However, it can get more serious. If someone released a gar in a local waterway, I'd be upset. Some small things don't really matter to me. But, of course, those same things can easily get out of hand.

I say no to known noxious fish, however if it is fish that you know could not survive due climate conditions I say good luck to those who keep them provided they never release them. Here in Queensland,Australia we can't import a lot of species but we can keep , sell and breed most fish that are already in the state as long as they are not on the noxious species list.Remember that most species would be able to survive with our climate yet states like South Australia have very strict rules and don't allow most species taken for granted here in Queensland even though a lot of the species banned could not survive with the climate of that area.
Qld= non strict regulations yet most species could survive if released.
SA=strict regulations yet most banned fish wouldn't survive.
Sometimes I think they have it backwards.

It also depends on the person keeping such specimens.
All in all I would rather see 100 responsible fish keepers , keeping illegal fish(provided they are not noxious fish) than 1 irresponsible $%ker buying what is not illegal at the local pet shop ,watch it out grow their tank and then release the fish.

There are about 245 countries on Earth, if you don't like this one you're welcome to live in another.

exactly!

I *had* a clarius.

It was better that I took it before the shop sold it to the guy with an outdoor pond:WHOA:

Ok, so for all you keeping illegal fish that are endangered and saying "I'm helping out the species b/c I'm responsible...."

Who granted you that? Yourself? What are your qualifications other than being an over zealous hobbiest? Are you breeding them? Publishing research? Anything at all for the good of the species?

Also, if people like that didn't keep fish of that nature, we would be able to eliminate the blackmarket trade of those species. Next to drugs and weapons, the animal blackmarket is the highest negative trafficing issue in the world. If you are buying an illegal fish (Whether endangered or just prohibited due to it's nature), you are directly adding to that problem.

" If you are buying an illegal fish (Whether endangered or just prohibited due to it's nature), you are directly adding to that problem."

lol come on man.

last time i was at a LFS in LA county, i overheard a customer asking about a fw ray for sale. a fish that is 100% illegal in CA. the customer was an older couple and just thought it looked "neat" and wanted to buy it. the owner completely obliged and told them a bunch of BS about what it would take to keep it alive, tank requirements, etc.

now, are you telling me that old couple is "adding to the problem" or is the LFS' fault for blatantly stocking and selling an illegal fish. there is plenty of blame to go around if you want to look at it from that perspective.

I have read all the postings to this point in this very important thread. I am impressed with the wide variety of responses and the logical reasoning advanced by so many members.

This is one of the reasons I adopt fish when their owners can no longer keep them. I have 22 Pacu in my new 8000-gallon outdoor aquarium. The expression on the woman’s face tells it all.

Yes, Im very impressed that this threads is so active and that theres no flaming.
