whats your view on sharks?

Sharks are awesome. Listen to Matt, after all he is a shark biologist or something...

I believe sharks have the right to "attack" us, i mean, we don't have gills, were meant for land, not water, every time we go swiming we are entering a habitat we arn't meant to be in. Thats their territory, their turf, not ours.

As matt said, most attacks are just tastes or warning bites... or plain human stupidity.

I hate how they are considered killers, when they only kill afew, if any people a year, when we slaughter hundreds of billions of them for fins and sport.

In short, sharks are a pretty cool guy, and Steven Spielberg made everyone @#$ their pants with a 25 foot great white and now everyone is afraid of sharks ruthlessly attacking humans.

Hey matt? you ever swim with a great white shark before? i would love too!

Talk to Em about that... she's the white shark keeper.
I'll stick to the other species.

try watch the animal planets shark week.

They are apex predators, they have poor eyesight, and rely on other sense. one is being able to smell a drop blood miles away, and they have electric newron sensors( someone correct me) that can sense water splashing.

its true that someone said they are oppurtunist hunters. I bet that its very rare to have a shark eat a human, unless they were starving. I think most die, because of the wound, not actually being eaten.

research the statstics on death.
You are more likely going to die from driving to the beach, get stung by bees, and whatever else you can think of, then being attacked by a shark.

Okay are you referring to a single species of sharks or all sharks in general?

I ask because some species of sharks have very good sense of vision, while some others are virtually blind (like the Greenland & Sleeper sharks).

Also not all sharks are Apex Predators. While most species of sharks are certainly predatory - less than 1/8 of all shark species are considered to be true Apex Predators.

I thought it was GOOD. But it was enlightening.

Once Sharks were considered to be the most feared animals in the ocean. (Soon I think that title may go to the Humbolt Squid... another incredible animal) But to think that 90% of the shark population has been destroyed in only the last hundred years... astounding. Sharks reputations as dangerous was conceived when the population was many many times more than it's current state- with such a reduction in population, the tales of their danger is almost exclusively perpetuated by repetition and regurgitation of old stories.

Sharkwater is an AMAZING film.

BEST FILM EVER!!!!!!! Everyone should see it!

I just skimmed this thread but I gave a speech for school on this same exact subject last month!!!! 26pets, if you want I can send you my outline, (and my power point with pics if I can find it). Its full of shark attack stats. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to go into why sharks are worth saving. Mostly just talks about human being's irrational fear of being attacked by sharks and how most attacks are mistakes. Did you try the International Shark Attack File? I also got a lot of my info from Sharkwater.

Here is a pic i used to show how sharks mistake surfers for sea turtles or sea lions if you wan to use it. My instructor really liked this one so I bet yours will too! :D Plus the cover of time showing how the media likes to exaggerate.
