Whats your water change schedule?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I overfeed a tank I change 50% of the water once a week, normally though it's 50% every two weeks. If a tank has been neglected, I will give hardy fish a 50% WC and more sensitive a couple frequent 25% WCs.

I gravel vacuum most of the time, but in my lightly stocked tanks I tend to put on the cleaning claw and just let it sit and siphon out water.

I clean the tank every Monday. Take all the decorations out and do a 50% water change.

Here goes...

150 gal Fahaka - 20%, once a week (nitrates <5)
75 gal clown loaches - 50% once a week
55 gal Ceylon (brackish) - 50% every 10 days
55 gal Crayfish - 50% once a week
55 gal bichirs (fully planted) - 50% once a week
20 gal convict fry - 50% every 3-4 days
20 gal convict parents - 50% once a week

Why do you take out the deco? Just curious, cause beneficial bacteria will cover everything in the tank, so I would suggest against cleaning the decorations. Just my opinion.

On all my large tanks i do 80% every 5 -6 days,my smaller tanks 75% every 7 days,i gravel vac everytime(never had a problem and have been doing it that way for years)I dont see how some folks can only do 25% once a week, the amount of waste in some of my tanks(larger fish) i need more than 25% just to get the waste out, even my 125 gallon geo tank, which is my lightest stock takes more than 25% for a good gravel vac and if i skip a gravel vac, forget it. Myabe in a lightly stocked tank you can do 25% but in my experience most large fish produce to much waste in a week to only do 25%(amonnia produced from gills, poo, urine, left over food etc)is a tremendouse amount of waste, what do you guys that do only 25% water changes do to keep your water parameters in check, just curious.

30% every weekend. I do vac some, but my 100g is kinda understock. Most my fish are under 3" and only have 9 fishies...

I do 50% in most my tanks, but my 150 keeps the nitrates <5 with a 20% WC, once a week. I only have 1-6" Fahaka puffer in the tank. I use pool filter sand, so the poop rests on the top of it and is lifted into the water column by the Koralia 4 I have in the tank and out the overflow. It could also help that I add about 5 fresh gallons everyday for top-off. Also, forgot to mention, I have a large plant that grows in my sump. That definately takes some nitrates out of the water.:headbang2
