what's your worst purchase

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would have to say my worst would have been when I first got into this hobby, I purchased a teacup ray without doing any research about eating habits or even substrate. never made that mistake again

Heh. Any fish that I don't have anymore. :)

Actually, Wal-Mart bettas. Back when I was an uninformed consumer I bought many Wal-Mart bettas. Even with my best efforts, they consistently got dropsy and died. One day I bought a betta at a nearby pet store and it never got sick. I was in shock. I am still impressed at how consistently those bettas would die.

my worst purpose was a red belly piranha around 6 inches.i would never buy another in my life:irked: they are wussies.they are afraid of their own shadow as they will flip out of the tank as u aproach them

I got five an they will swim an look right at me... just takes some time with them. Sure arnt pussys to other fish :D

I bought a Midas fish once when I was starting out. Everything was going well until it was about 8 months old and killed my 3 year old oscar over night. I was pissed!

My worst purchase... A pacu when I was 12-13 for a 55 gallon with tiger barbs he never ate that I saw and was too skittish he was taken back thank god.

EDITED TO ADD!
Also all the equipment to start and "Sustain and stock" a 75 gallon salt tank which crashed constantly and lost thousands of dollars attempting thank god I learned a lot from this experience even though I was 13....

$350 mbu puffer put him in the tank lasted for one day and his air bladder inflated and wouldnt go down so he died

Two words-

Electric catfish.

Mine was an electric blue hap. The lfs had 2 sizes and all were very nicely colored! I got one of the smaller ones since they were a lot cheaper. ($16 compared to $45). Well it turned out the fish was hormoned. So now I have a brown fish. I asked the lfs about it and they said that the place they get them from hormone them to tell which ones are male and mine's definably male. Time will tell for sure. If I have a female hap I will be angry.

I didn't loose any money over it but I did use all my store credit which I have regretted ever since.

When I was a kid I always stuck with Cichlids because they were so hardy--no maintenance, no water changes, no worrying about the filter, testing the water, etc. I know that makes sounds terrible and I now know much better, but I was like 11 and those fish still thrived, all things considered.

Then one trip to the lfs saw me returning triumphantly to my tank with some type of loach, I forget which kind, but one of the slender ones, which to my 11 year old self, was basically as cool as an eel. Needless to say, the loach was not too thrilled with the condition of my tank, as I wouldn't expect many scaleless fish to be and promptly bit it.

Yeah I was a stupid kid, but man was that disappointing.
:(
