what's your worst purchase

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bought (6) 2" firemouth cichlids with the intention of growing them out and hopefully having them pair off. After about a week, one grew a mm larger than the others and began to systematically murder everything else in the tank until he was the only thing left in the 37 gallon aquarium. He was rehomed to my buddy and I have never tried breeding cichlids again.

Actually my worst purchase was my Buenos Aires tetras for my 55, which pester and bullied other fish right from the start. They caused havoc and disturbed my community tank. Might not be big, but they were aggressive.

I gave them to a friend, but while acclimating them I saw the dominate tetra attacking the other tetras, ripping their scales off. Once released they did fine in my friend's tank, as the residents were all semi-aggressive and the tetras knew their place.

puffer fish what else can be said about that

Nothing wrong with Puffer Fish... unless you decided to put it in a community tank, in which case, not the fishes fault :)

My worst purchase was a CAE (Chinese Algae Eater) Damn thing never ate algae, but loved sucking the slime coat off my old palembang puffers till i decided to get rid of the damn thing... at which point, i've vowed never to own CAES again...

I actually have bought CAEs before, but they were still young and never caused a problem before they died of an unknown reason. Heard stories of them being terrible fishes. Luckily mine didn't get to that stage.

my worst purchase was a chinese algae eater. when i got into this hobby I bought some starter fish and easy to take care of fish. The tank had a serious algae problem. so i got a CAE and put him in the tank. he was a golden colored one and he looked so cool. I got him as a half inch long baby. he was acting nice to the other fish and he ate algae like there was no tomarrow. he was a good fish until he hit four inches and he attacked my fish and left them bruise marks and he also stopped eating algae so the problem came back and He killed all my fish and that CAE got to a foot and a half long. at that point he killed even the tinfoil barbs. tinfoils are toughest fish I ever known. so if anyone wants a chinese algae eater NEVER get one. The stores sell them as good cleaning fish. thats true until they get big. The store said they were peacefull and said they never get big and thats what fooled me

My worst purchase ever was for my 2 oscars, for my 46 gal tank. They grew from 2 inches to 9 inches in about 4 months. They woke me up every night with their jumping, also at feeding time they always splashed me with lots of water. Also, their splashing damaged the paint on the wall next to them. However they died over christmas due to a freak heater malfunction.
