When is your ray active? This question is meant for its activity level OUTSIDE of being fed.

Anybody ever have a ray "switch" its activity level time? If so what caused it?

My marbled motorro used to be active 24/7 when it had very little substrate. Recently I moved it into a tank with sand and now its only active in the morning usually keeping itself buried during the evenings. :irked: I was thinking that maybe its more active without substrate because it feels less secure and feels the need to move around more versus with substrate to hide in all day, feelings more safe, it doesnt have to be so active??? Thoughts???

Please share when your ray is most active and whether you have substrate or not, im curious if there is any relationship between the two.

Any ideas aside from removing the sand to "switch" its activity time? Im home during the evenings so it would be nice to see the ray during this time. (yes, I realize im being selfish)

I get the same results the rays in tank without substrate are active all the time night and day. The ones with sand in the tanks are more active at night and during the day tend to stay buried.

Basically at all points of the day.. Light on or light off. No substrate. Extremely happy it is because a non active ray might be kinda boring..

I have had motoro's in sand though and I don't think they were as active..

Ummm thus far it seems like rays without substrate seem more active...

any thoughts why?

I have two motoro's with substrate and they are always moving around but are more active as far as swimming up and down the glass in the evening. However, my bigger motoro has been hiding in the sand a little more the older he gets, but never for longer than 10 or 20 min. I should add that I usually feed them in the evening and I think that might have something to do with them being more active and getting used to their feeding schedule. Hope this helps.

i have had all my rays with a substrate..... I believe it make the ray more comfortable and "at home"....., which I think (just speculation) is much healthier for rays. Rays are sensitive to so many things I think that it makes sense to make them feel as comfortable as possible (as is for all fish)

As far as them being less active....., maybe just a little but not enough for me to be concerned of bothered. My rays were always active enough for me to be happy.... Usually rays are most active when they are hungry....., so obviously this could be factored into when you want them to be their most active.... when you get home at night......

probably scared looking for somewere to hide

if a ray has substrate when ever it gets scared it can cover its self on the spot without substrate it flaps around all over the place looking for somewere to hide when scared

rays do much better with substrate IMO as they spend 90% of the night digging in the substate looking for food its what they do naturally

when my ray pups were born i put them in a bare tank for 1 day they didnt look happy so i put a few hand fulls of gravel in the tank within 2hrs they were diffing and covering them selfs with the gravel if it wasnt a natural thing how would they know how to do it

So rays naturally more active at night in the wild?

yup..... Do you have a moon light....??? If not pick up one and watch them they go nutz at night..... I never really used a light directly over the top of my ray tanks for during the day.... I always just used ambient lighting from somewhere else in the room..... This seemed to help be more active during the day...... maybe that would be worth a try....
