I had motoros in a tank with sand substrate who covered themselves from time to time. My current ray in barebottom has never attempted it once or at least not that I have ever seen. He still blows at the bottom but never flaps in an attempt to cover himself. It would be interesting to add sand to the tank now and see if he recognizes the sand being there and attempts to cover up. My guess would be no because I think they only cover up when they feel uncomfortable and he is very comfortable in his surroundings. I personally think it is cognitive thought and not relying on instinct. I know I have read somewhere about rays being more advanced than your normal fish but not certain where they fall on the intelligence scale.

I agree with this as well, Now that all my rays are comfortable and accustomed to being in bare bottom tanks I do not see them attempting to bury themselves anymore. The only rays I own that attempt to do this are my pearls, They have been in my tanks for just about two years and they still tend to be quite nervous and will dart around the tank and attempt to bury themselves even thou there is no substrate in the tanks and never was. These pearls are the only ones that exhibit this behavior when spooked. My leo, henlei, p14 and motoro do not exhibit this type of behavior anymore.

i would agree with this when i had a pair of pearls when i done water changes they would always cover themselfs but the other leos wouldnt

even still when the lights go out my p14 now pump the substrate like crazy even spinning around in the substrate playing

rays love substrate and im 100% sure of that IMO

I will be doing some research on this soon. I have a used acrylic tank coming to my store size is 16ftx6ftx4ft acyrlic tenecor with built in sump along the back wall. Since this tank is going to be our show tank I will be putting substrate in there for the more natural look. I will also be placing all my breeding leo's in this tank. I know how many pups I got from these rays in the past year in bare bottom tanks and hope to compare future results with the rays in a tank with substrate. I am also curious which type of tank the rays feel more comfortable in and that would then lead to better breeding in my opinion.

Wow, this sounds like such an interesting project, def. keep us updated!

IMO - The rays with substrate will be happier hence more healthier pups and perhaps even faster breeding!!! Or another factor to consider and compare would be the pregnancy term and pup survival rate!!!

Nice Mike...., I CANT WAIT TO SEE THAT TANK...
I think that this is a very good idea / experiment. I have a feeling that you will see improved breeding, like the Gr8KarmaSF said.... Cant wait....

wouldnt it be the b est to give the ray the most comfortable and natural enviroment possible? We are doing this to take care of them and our entertainment but if entertaining ourselves comes as discomfert and stress to the animal should we do it? Is it worth it? I say think about it.

the only downfall of substrate is the rays push it up the side and scratch the tank over time
other than that i am a substrate supporter they spend alot of time playing and blowing in it

I use sand in my tank.
My motoros seem to be active most of the time, day and night. Occasionally the female will cover herself with sand for a short period of time.

My ray is active almost all the time, at least when I'm down looking at the tank (guess he's learned that me=food :)). He's usually sifting around the sand.

Can you even see the scratches when the tank is filled with water?
